10 Year On… Tom Odell’s ‘Long Way Down’

A decade ago British singer-songwriter Tom Odell released his debut album “Long Way Down“. The LP positively catapulted him to the height of success he is recognised for today.

The platinum-selling album is home to hit singles, ‘Another Love‘ and ‘Heal‘, along with 11 other emotive tracks. Full of rich sentimentality and piano ballad passion, Odell curated a debut that will forever be associated with him. In addition, the LP topped the UK Album Charts in 2013 and is a record drenched in heartache. It exhibits his signature powerful delivery of heartfelt emotion to indie guitar/piano arrangement.

Tom first came onto the scene in 2012 with his debut EP ‘Songs from Another Love‘. This features his award-winning single ‘Another Love‘. Furthermore, the track released via Lily Allen label’s In the Name Of. Lily herself singed Tom after hearing him perform. ‘Another Love‘ later made it onto his debut record and went on to become a major success across the UK and Europe. It peaked at no. 10 on the U.K Charts in 2013 and again in 2023. As a highlight in his career, it still holds up today.

2013 was a year jam-packed with indie excellence. The releases from fellow indie acts included Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, and The National. With “Long Way Down” Odell was joining a stellar lineup of indie artists in full force at a time.

Despite the album’s success in the charts and as a winner of the BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award in 2013, ‘Long Way Down‘ did not take everyone’s fancy. NME categorised it as ‘Offensively dull piano pop destined for Brits ubiquity’. However, Tom remained unbothered and focused on elevating his music with each succeeding release.

Since his first full-length project, Odell has gone on to release four albums. The latest of these was ‘Best Day of My Life‘ in 2022. Stripping it back to just an LP spotlighting his vocals and piano playing, the record received much praise and support from fans and critics. This year you will find Tom Odell on the road, touring his latest album.
