Here’s what happened when he spoke to IndustryMe about his journey so far and plans for the feature.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Classic singer songwriters, like Carole King, Paul Simon as well as newer ones like John Mayer, Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch and The War on Drugs. As well as Bands like, The Police, Arctic Monkeys, and The 1975, it’s a real mixed bag.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
Just being creative, we are all trying to say something, reach other people, and create a new experiences for ourselves and others. It’s nice to really connect with people on a different level through music, and when you do that’s definatly the best thing.
Can you you describe how it felt to sell out the Cluny?
It was amazing, but that was also a while ago for me. Playing live is fun, the I mostly enjoy the writing process and bringing songs to life in a studio.
Why the name change?
I felt I had done enough as ‘Alex Dobson’ and that name wasn’t only tied to music, but other creative project and different parts of the Music Industry. This was I can create a separate world with ‘Alex Michael’ and it also gives me a chance to show off the new sound.
Let’s get into the new single. What is ‘Another Love’ really about?
It’s about time spent traveling between London and my hometown of Durham, I think when I moved to London, I was really searching for something, looking for outside things, the material world to fulfil me when all along, I didn’t really need any of it. At its core, the record is about a human display of hedonistic behaviour, in which we continuously pursue new pleasures and experiences endlessly hoping to find that. Why do we always need more is the question I’m asking myself.
What was the writing process like for this song?
The chorus came together so quickly, and I got addicted to the lyric almost instantly. The verses however took months on end and it wasn’t until moments before the first vocal take that I thought ‘Yes, this now feels right’
You are often compared to James Bay and Passenger who are both incredible writers and artists, do you ever feel pressured to live up to that?
I think there’s always going to be a pressure to live up, but there’s pressure in everything now. I just want to try and make the best music I can, and hope that someone gets something out of it!
If you could have another love featured in any Netflix series of your choice which would it be and why?
I’ve just finished ‘Sex Education’ I think something like that would be cool. Because the sound is new yet classic and really familiar, similar to the aesthetic of that show.
What can we expect to see from you for the remainder of the year?
More tracks. I’m in a place where I have a few songs in the bag and it’s a case of listening to my gut and seeing what I think the next best move is. I really don’t want to get bogged down with numbers and followers as that’s all out of my control, but I’d love to gain new listeners along the way as well as prick up the ears of older ones who know me from playing local up north. I just want to be as creative as I possibly can this year and I’m so excited and grateful to have an outlet for my ideas. 2019 should hopefully see a few intimate show in and around London as well as songs about growing up, growing apart, getting ill, getting better, friends, family and everything in between that unites us.
Any final shoutouts or plugs?
I’m trying to do as much creative stuff on my Instagram @alexmichaeluk – so If people want to keep up with what I’m doing, that’s the best place to go. Otherwise, hope you get something out of everything I put into ‘Another Love’
