BRIT Awards Announces Latest Nominees for 2023
The BRIT Awards have returned for 2023, giving a platform to established and newer artists alike. The show has made minor improvements, but has been criticised for lacking representation in certain categories. Harry Styles and Wet Leg dominate the award show with 4 nominations each. They will be going head to head against Stormzy, The 1975, and Fred again.. for Album of the Year.
Against the big names is new nominees including Kojey Radical and Rina Sawayama for Best New Artist and Cat Burns who is nominated for Best Pop/R’n’B and Best Single for her huge hit ‘go.’ Nova Twins, Mimi Webb and Eliza Rose will also be competing against established names like Becky Hill, Arctic Monkeys, and George Ezra. FLO has already won the Rising Star award, beating out competition from Cat Burns and Nia Archives.
The International categories see the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar fight it out for International Artist. Amongst the nominees for International Group is K-Pop group BLACKPINK, folk duo First Aid Kit, and the gospel trio Gabriels.
The award show has received criticism for having an all-male lineup for Best Artist and not choosing any R’n’B artists for Best Pop/R’n’B. The backlash may hopefully lead to future discussions about the representation of women and R’n’B in the future. The BRIT Awards has received plenty of criticism here and will need to learn lessons going forward.
