Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We live under the cover of a star-studded pop cosmos these days. Charli xcx, Magdalena Bay, and Remi Wolf have whole constellations unto themselves, but 2024 has been notable for the sheer array of bright lights in the sky. This is especially true for the British East Asian and South East Asians – known as BESEAs – who have put out new music this year. beabadoobee, Wasia Project, and princess xixi have all released projects to acclaim, and Chloe Qisha is yet another body shooting across the universe.

A Malaysian-born British-based singer, Qisha has been brewing up a fanbase over the last year. Starting with singles ‘I Lied, I’m Sorry’ and ‘VCR Home Video’, the alt-pop starlet has been building up to the release of her debut EP on November 15.

Enter ‘Sexy Goodbye’, Qisha’s revisionist take on your quintessential break-up song. Instead of tears, it’s “Bagging up your s**t, it’s going straight in the trash.”. Instead of exes, she names all the women he’s been side-eyeing. “Stacy from yoga, Charlotte from work.”, that sort of thing. All driven by an intro that nods to 1980s disco hit ‘Funkytown’ by Lipps Inc., where we’re all partying towards the exit sign. This is before the singer sashays into a swaying chorus that longs for a hot, sexy goodbye on her terms. It’s very slinky and dexterous, a personal reclamation project laid out on a sick synth-beat.

Having just completed her very first show in London, Qisha has lined up even more dates in Paris and Manchester over the coming months. Coupled with new music, this could be the launch of another BESEA luminary to admire from the ground up.
