debdepan Drop Genre-Bending New Track

Chelsea and Grace make up the duo that is debdepan. The pair from Margate have released their latest single ‘Habit‘, which incorporates elements of grunge, indie, and dance. It is the first release to drop for their upcoming EP, ‘Lovers & Others‘. The EP will drop this November under Silent Kid Records.

Complexity and Inspiration

Their new track draws on inspiration from the likes of Klaxons and The Rapture. The emotionally charged lyrics delve into human feelings of inadequacy and the games people play for affection. I enjoy the complex idea behind the record, as it’s something relatable and real yet not always easy to write about. There’s an intensity throughout the vocals which pairs well with the theming.

The pair began writing together during lockdown and formed in 2022. They released their first single, ‘Darkest Hour‘, in September of the same year. Their debut EP, ‘OMEN‘, only continued the momentum gained from this initial release. Both BBC Introducing and BBC 6 Music have recognised debdepan’s work and continue to support it.

A Journey In Sound

The band aims to further their interpretation of dance-driven arrangements with this new EP. After collaborating with DJ Phaser in Portugal’s Westway Lab, it is evident that they have decided dance music is a route they want to continue to pursue. In this specific single, I think it is a good addition to the dark pop sounds the pair have explored.

However, their roots also tie closely with 2000s-esque indie. After coming off the back of supporting Pete Doherty, they’ll undoubtedly have garnered more fans across the indie scene. The guitar riff in the chorus instantly reminded me of early Måneskin. They are also great at creating this mysterious and intense atmosphere within their tracks.

With their sophomore EP only a few months away from release, it’s clear that fans of the pair have more excitement to come this year. There’s also a selection of live dates across the UK and Germany, which are expected to drop with that release.
