Dela Kay Pulls From Eighties Pop and Pop Punk In Latest Track

LA-based artist Dela Kay has dropped a new track titled ‘Guilty Conscience‘. The track is driven by real circumstances that many listeners will relate to. Above all, themes of heartbreak, cheating, and secrets surround the lyricism sung by Kay. These lyrics were co-written alongside her by powerhouse writers. These are Nick Cozine, known for his work with Machine Gun Kelly, as well as Jake Finch, who has showcased his talents working with the supergroup boygenius.
Each part of the song structurally feels inspired by different stylistic choices. The chorus is rooted in pop punk, specifically the women who incorporated more of the pop side to create catchy tracks. Think Hayley Williams. Whereas every verse feels a bit less catchy yet a bit more vulnerable. The eighties-inspired synths work well with the vocal style, which drags out some of the notes. Having a contrast in pace and emotion within the track does give it a nice comparison of both openness and just being able to enjoy the song.

Furthermore, the track is accompanied by a music video. Kay worked with the Nashville-based studio Working Holiday to create it. I enjoyed the dark backdrops and moody lighting within the music video. It makes the pop-punk-esque chorus feel more mature. Also, the video utilises the performance style of video. It keeps the focus of the themes on the lyrics, as well as demonstrating Kay’s lip-syncing abilities.
Kay has a promising future ahead of her. She has garnered over 2 million streams over the course of her career. Her first single, ‘9 Out of 10‘, began an interest in creating music influenced by electro-pop, which can still be felt within this latest release. Additionally, she has been pushing to create music that is more authentic over the past year. Ever since her return to music in 2021, she has steered more towards an alternative sound. The way that she utilises components of pop punk is really impactful. I hope this artist continues down this path.
