Eclectic Producer KAYTRANADA Drops New Lover/Friend EP

Eclectic electronic music mastermind KAYTRANADA just dropped a groovy new EP – ‘Lover/Friend‘. This houses two funky tracks with soft vocals and addictive instrumentals. This is classic KAYTRANADA, building further on the blueprint he’s created: slinky synths and bold beats.

The EP’s title suggests juxtaposition, and the two songs on this project are very different. This therefore truly showcases the versatility of his musical abilities. If you’re a fan through his R&B funk/house fusions like ‘Intimidated‘ featuring H.E.R or ‘Girl‘ with The Internet – the title track will be to your taste. If his rap collaborations have spiked your interest, such as his recent collaboration record with Amin√©‘Stuntin‘ is a disruptive, decadent listen.

Lover/Friend featuring Rochelle Jordan

It’s great to see camaraderie between two great artists, and it’s truly special when the artists share a home place. Sticking with his Canadian roots, KAYTRANDA enlisted Toronto native Rochelle Jordan to this track. She glides across his smooth instrumental, as she sings of the often blurry line between lovers and friends. With a sweet and sultry voice, it’s evident that Jordan is an exceptionally underrated vocalist. She also has a forward-thinking approach to music, describing some of her music as ’31st century electronic bangers’. This may be the most perfect way to describe this collaboration.

Stuntin featuring Channel Tres

In contrast to ‘Lover/Friend‘, ‘Stuntin‘ sees KAYTRANADA lay a glittering sound perfect for a boastful rap moment. This presents the perfect backdrop for Compton rapper Channel Tres to shine. With a voice reminiscent of Tyler The Creator, Tres is bold, brilliant, and artistically unafraid. What’s more, this record is the meeting of two brilliant minds: young musicians, nonconforming and authentic. If you need a confidence boost, give this track a listen. This California rapper is feeling himself on this feel-good rhythm – ‘Time for me to get in my zone / Which, which one of y’all am I takin’ home?’ he raps.

To conclude, this is the KAYTRANADA we know and love. This has been an exceptional year for the hard-working producer, who has really found his musical footing. Furthermore, these records tease his next full-length LP, planned for release in 2024. Fans know what to expect, and he delivers every time – whether it’s a supersonic remix or his own material.
