Philly soul is back with a bang. Remix artist, production maestro, and club banger architect Eric Kupper has found his ‘crate digging’ has paid off big time. He recently discovered ‘The Philly All Stars‘, a supergroup of musicians from the golden era of Philly soul. He’s reimagined their track ‘Love Is The Message‘ – an unreleased eighties tune that deserved a modern-day remix.
Philadelphia has long been a breeding ground for funky flavour. The American state found its trademark soul subgenre, Philly soul, in the late sixties. It delivers a distinctive disco sound, a lively fusion of Motown and funk. Consequently, this genre birthed legends like The O’Jays and Teddy Pendergrass. This sound is steadily supplying the foundation for a new house music wave.
This track transports you to a roller rink under a glittering disco ball. The experience is psychedelic, and the healing hippie energy is rife. “Love is the message, I’m giving you the message,” the vocals chant like a mantra. In addition, Kupper manages to upkeep the integrity of the original orchestration whilst injecting a fresh beat that builds and builds. He has created a euphoric summer anthem that radiates positivity. What’s not to love?
Some music fans argue for leaving classics as they are, however, I love it when music from the past gets revived for a new audience. It showcases legendary acts who otherwise may be forgotten by a new generation. It extends the legacy and legend of genres like Philly soul, ushering in a classic, heart-warming sound so often missing in modern music.
