Tom’s Picks
SABRI – Make Me Feel
Someone we have always been big supporters of, this artist is gearing up for a new release that we can’t wait to hear. ‘Make Me Feel‘ oozes with atmosphere from the get-go with those kick drums and clean synths. SABRI then comes in and delivers a top-of-the-range vocal performance, especially on the chorus alongside the guitar. Those high notes are matched very nicely by the background vocalists, as she details being led on. Great stuff, can’t wait to hear more!
dexter in the newsagent – Stranger to love
This artist has been included in the past, but with a mixtape out today, I thought I’d give them some spotlight. The beat is equally mesmerising and tranquil with its D’n’B/pop influence, and the smooth singing of the lead matches that vibe. dexter brings a heartfelt take on her love for this person, providing passion in the performance. You feel a sense of endearment to this very simple but honest approach to the topic. Another really enjoyable and human piece of music, that has me eager to check out the rest of ‘Time Flies‘.
Romy – Love Who You Love
It is quite late in the year to be dropping your first piece of new music, but I ain’t complaining. This very chilled-out piece of breakbeat music is an ode to that special someone. Romy is very confident and defiant in her passion and feelings, something you have to admire. On the chorus, the bass cranks up a notch and gives the track a bit of oomph. ‘Love Who You Love‘ delivers as a light dancefloor anthem and a show of defiance to those who critique you and who you love.

Mariam Davina – Couldn’t Imagine
We always love to support Purple List alumni, and this singer makes it very easy for us on her new single. The violins ease you in, as does the harp, giving a real classy vibe to the track. Mariam then sings her heart out, describing the importance of this person. You really feel the bond between these two people, showcasing an artist who knows how to project emotion. Truly a gorgeous singer and conveyor of feeling.

Kwengface FT. Interplanetary Criminal & Flowdan – Dot Dot
One of my favourite rappers to hear on a rave tune teams up with one of the top guys in UKG and an OG. The 140 BPM influence is certainly present, as well as a dark and gritty slice of garage. The flow is flowing, sliding over this beat nicely with punchy bars. ‘Dot Dot‘ is straight-to-the-point in being an effective track that will have you moving and bopping your head.

Kofi Stone FT. Maverick Sabre – Venice
If you’re a fan of laid-back rap with lyrics laced in wisdom, you need to add Birmingham rapper Kofi Stone into your rotation. Today, he has dropped his newest project ‘All The Flowers Have Bloomed’, and from what I’ve heard so far, it is a perfect title for what you get on the record. This musician has a gentle, reflective, and deeply personal approach to art. His new record explores themes of healing, faith, and relationships, in a stripped back style I really admire. When I saw he collaborated with another underrated fave of mine, Maverick Sabre, I knew it would be magic. Kofi is easy on the ears (and easy on the eyes), and deserves your full attention.

COWZ – Ur No Rockstar
Brighton-based, genre-smashing queer alt-pop? Sign me up. With music that feels like you’re a Bratz doll in a glittering pink club, COWZ are forging their own path in the music scene with their newly released EP, ‘YOU’RE INTO THIS’. This is a short, but sweet dose of over-the-top autotune in the best possible way. It’s a chaotic shot of hyperpop with a nice amount of alternative sounds weaved in, with ‘Ur No Rockstar’ being my personal favourite so far. Punky and punchy, I’m very excited to see what more is to come from Saga and Tash.

Kareen Lomax – apartment
This is a new artist I just discovered this week, and I’m so glad I did! Let me put you onto U.S. based vocalist, Kareen Lomax and her unique vocals that keep listeners on their toes. This songwriter who has written for Leon Bridges and Syd has entered a new era of solo artist masterdom. In this single, ‘apartment’, she is reinventing herself while holding onto warm memories. This deeply intimate track is about her packing up her parents’ house after her Dad passed away, but doesn’t play like a heart-wrenching ballad. In fact, it feel vibrant, colourful, and hopeful. It’s knowing that the memories are kept in your heart, not in physical things like a place or an object. “Never got back that deposit / Don’t feel like I lost it/ ‘Cause I got more than what I bargained for.“. It’s great.

JT – Girls Gone Wild
If you’re looking for a high-energy track to kick-start your weekend, look no further than self-proclaimed City Cinderella, JT’s new track, ‘Girls Gone Wild’. Armed with untouchable confidence and charisma, JT unleashes a sexy track to light up the clubs. Charging in with plenty of bounce and hyperactive energy, this track will really hit on a Friday or Saturday night. Don’t think too much about it, just enjoy it and shake your thing.

Sports Team – Pet Sounds
I’m really stepping into my genre-exploring era at the moment, and bands like Sports Team are at the precipice of getting me on board with indie rock. The Harlesden collective deliver fun lyrics and a razor sharp sound that can win over anybody. Their third album, ‘Boys These Days‘ dropped earlier in the year, but the deluxe version has just landed. New track ‘Pet Sounds’ is already doing numbers. Give it a listen to understand why.
