Gorillaz Infuse Their History With Modernity On New Track

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Legendary genre-blenders Gorillaz have dropped the second track from their upcoming album. ‘The Manifesto‘ spans over seven minutes and features both Trueno and Proof. The album will be the group’s first since their 2023 record ‘Cracker Island‘. This new release celebrates the community who have helped build the foundations of the band over its history. This includes a number of posthumous appearances, including those of Bobby Womack, as well as Dennis Hopper.

It’s undeniable that Gorillaz are a band that explores genres, styles, and artists from across the world. Impressively, the artists perform songs in five different languages across this new album alone. On this particular single, I enjoyed deceased D12 member Proof’s verse the most. It had more of a jagged edge to it and switched up the atmosphere without losing the essence of the song as a whole. Also, Damon Albarn’s vocals as the fictional frontman 2D were exactly what the track needed. His voice is synonymous with the band’s style, as well as helping to maintain some consistency between the variations of genre that they explore.

Worldwide Influence

The instrumentation is diverse but excellent. Brothers Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash play the sarod excellently. Along with an array of other talented musicians, there is The Mountain Choir, led by Vijayaa Shanker. Gorillaz have always been able to expertly infuse international sounds into their compositions. This has been a longstanding trait of theirs since their debut album, with tracks such as ‘Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo)‘ setting the standard.

The track focuses on themes such as life and rebirth. Proof makes this even more prevalent when discussing these themes in his verses. Having an artist who has been deceased for almost twenty years discuss mortality really helps to drive the message home. He previously featured on the song ‘911‘, which dropped back in 2001. I like that this album is recognising the myriad of talented guest artists who have made an impact within the group. I’m particularly excited to see how Dennis Hopper is incorporated into the new LP.
