#IMDiscovers: The April Edition (Part 1)

2023 is already proving to be a great year for music as we edge closer to Summer. For now, Spring is here, but the sun is out, and the weather is getting warmer. To celebrate being able to get that coat off, why not check out the latest batch of music, from some sensational grime to passionate R’n’B. There is bound to be a song or EP that takes your fancy, so make sure to stream these after you’ve finished reading.

Duppy-Delusions Of Grandeur

The first of three Purple List artists on this list, Duppy delivers on this new EP. Having promoted the project via Rinse FM and 1Xtra, he is making a name for himself and standing tall. With fast-paced verses and wavey 140 bpm instrumentals, this project succeeds in bringing some top-tier Grime. Duppy is one of the leaders in the new wave of MCs in this genre, so be sure to lock into this EP.

Lizzie Berchie-I Hope

Dropping for the first time in 2023, Lizzie Berchie is starting the year in style on this song. Her follow-up to her ‘Under the Sun‘ project provides soulful vocals and an equally chilled instrumental. This is a top-tier performance from one of our Purple List artists, and we are expecting more sensational releases as the year goes on.

Mahalia-Terms and Conditions

With album number 3 surely set to drop soon, ‘Terms and Conditions‘ could be a nice teaser for that record. Written in collaboration with RAYE, the track has a pounding kick drum mixed with both artists harmonising on the chorus. The song documents Mahalia knowing what she wants out of a relationship that has hit a rough patch. As she showed in a recent interview, she continues to fly the flag for R’n’B vocally and musically.

Mnelia-Genesis

Having recently shown her talent at SXSW, ‘Genesis‘ is another example of the talent Mnelia possesses in abundance. This vibey piece of R’n’B is complimented nicely by her passionate vocals and the acoustic guitar in the background. Mnelia is another shining example of the plethora of talent in U.K. R’n’B, which will be on full display at her show on June 16.

Gardna-Massive

Our final Purple List alumni on this list, this Bristol MC is back with another banger. Bringing a mixture of jump-up and roller-D’n’B vibes to the table, he flows nicely over this more chilled sound. The verses come at you at a steady pace and are very nice. This track is sure to lock off the dance and make waves at the festivals Gardna is at, including MADE in Birmingham.

JERUB-Scared To Be Myself

Fresh off the success of ‘Cold,’ which has hit 100k streams on Spotify, JERUB is back with his second release of 2023. ‘Scared To Be Myself‘ continues in the vulnerable direction of his previous single, truly fitting that anthem vibe. Its personal lyrics about being worried about what others think is very relatable and sure to go over well with listeners.

Varas-There You Go!

Their first EP since 2020, Varas is back with this five-track offering. Teaser tracks like ‘Hell No‘ provided insight into the personal, indie-rock direction of this project. Alongside the two singles are new tracks like ‘Waterboy‘ that take things in a more abrasive and electronic direction. These songs provide a taster of what is to come and an example of his versatile musical pallet.

Tar Ráe-Too Bad

Back after a break of 6 months, Tar Ráe is the latest rising star from LDN. This is classic R’n’B done very well, providing the passion and vocals you expect from this genre. Described as a song about regretting taking something for granted, it feels powerful and personal to the artist. With music of this quality, let’s hope this isn’t her only release of 2023.

Abi Jenaé-Empire

Bringing some Afrobeats just in time for pre-Summer, ‘Empire‘ could be the track to get you ready for that season. This track is vibrant, catchy, and full of charisma which is exactly what you want from a Summer banger. With her new EP set to drop very soon, expect to be hearing more from Abi Jenaé this year.

Saneit-Be The One

Saneit provides listeners with another great piece of Rhythm and Blues on this funky number. Great vocals are complimented by a production that wouldn’t sound out of place on a movie soundtrack. The sensual nature of the track fits perfectly on this late-night jam. ‘Be The One‘ is sure to go down well with the R’n’B heads and everyone else who comes across this song.

Jmac-Let It Go

Having ended 2022 on a high with his ‘The Shortcut Home EP,’ Jmac continues his hard work here. Already his 4th release of the year, he goes in a more mellow direction on this one. Not only a pleasant-sounding production, the lyricism is also on point, highlighting his talents as a writer. Jmac is here to show his skills and don’t be surprised if he drops another song anytime soon.
