2018 was a hugely successful year for up and coming female musicians all over the world, and 2019 is surely going to follow on in its path. Here is the list of all the artists you need to be aware of to make sure your playlists are at their peak this year.
Zoe Modiga
Zoe Modiga is a South African singer-songwriter who has specialised all her education around her love of music. She has studyied at the National School of Arts in Johannesburg as well as studying jazz vocals at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town. After releasing her debut album in 2017, Zoe has been nominated for Best Jazz Album and Best African Artist for the South African Music Awards 2018, Best New Comer in Jazz and Best Jazz Song 2018. Zoe’s soulful voice and unique personal identity within her music is what will set her apart from other musicians in 2019.
Liz Huett
Liz Huett was a California local before she decided to move to Nashville to pursue her musical ambitions, where she was then hired as a backing vocalist for Taylor Swift. Liz toured with Taylor for three and a half years before coming off the tour to begin her own song writing journey. Despite working in the background a lot, Liz makes it clear this is not where she wants to stay. Liz’s music is deeply personal with brazen lyrics and song titles like, ‘STFU & Hold Me’ and ‘Don’t LV U Anymore’ which fit her pop sound and Nashville twang.
Kara Marni
Kara Marni is a London based artist releasing emotive and soulful pop music with her debut EP, ‘Love Just Ain’t Enough’. As you listen to her music you can feel how this artist has been influenced by successful singers such as Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse while still being able to put her own personality into her songs. The difference in songs like ‘My Love is Your Love’ and ‘Move’ show what a range Kara has and how talented this young musician is. After featuring on BBC Introducing in summer 2018, Kara Marni is definitely set for success in 2019.
Alice Merton
Alice Merton is perhaps one of the most well-known artists on this list after her music came into the mainstream with the success of her debut single ‘No Roots’ in February 2017, which reached number one in France. Alice is a German-Canadian singer who uses the many moves she’s had across 4 countries in 12 years as the inspiration behind songs like ‘No Roots’ and ‘Hit The Ground Running’. Merton officially released her debut album ‘Mint’ on January 18th 2019 and is kicking off the new year with a European tour which is a sure sign 2019 is going to be a big year for the singer.
