‘Insignificant Other’ – A New Look Into Queens of the Stone Age’s ‘Perfecth’

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Queens of the Stone Age’s latest song, ‘Insignificant Other,’ is about more than a breakup.

Its release came paired with the announcement of their ninth studio album ‘Perfecth‘, which is set to come out on the 30th of October. The album consists of 9 tracks, including their previous release ‘Easy Street‘ with ‘Insignificant Other’ giving fans a deeper insight into the themes driving the project.

The song is smooth. In many ways, it gives you the sound you’d expect from the band. There’s a sultry tone on the guitar, and Josh Homme’s vocals are as clean as ever. Yet the lyrics bend a tone of edge into the track that disrupts its harmony.

‘Insignificant Other’ shows what happens when a relationship flips. The feeling when two people who were so connected separate into nothing; when the one person who was somebody becomes nobody. This experience, felt by so many listeners, is what the song describes.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 6, Homme calls the song “the crown jewel of the record” for its exploration of acceptance and letting go.

At first listen, it’s full of contradictions. The lyrics in the second verse confess, “I still wish you were mine”, yet as the song deepens, this resolves with “Letting go of you is beautiful”. However, this switch-up seems to reflect the journey you go through after a separation. What’s initially painful eventually becomes freeing, and QOTSA shows this effortlessly in the song.

The lyrics aren’t the only way the band pulls you into these feelings. ‘Insignificant Other’ has a repetitive melody. It’s the band’s classic technique used to put listeners in a trance, seen in so many of their other songs. With this song, it makes you feel like you’re moving through the process of the relationship ending. What drives this home is the final reminder that “It’s over”.

There’s still a sprinkling of surrealism, much like many of their other tracks. Mentions of psychobabble, birth charts, and spells lighten the mood with a touch of welcomed whimsy. Yet what sticks out to me the most with this track and ‘Easy Street’ is the commitment to embracing imperfection. Both singles allow for inconsistent timings and rough edges. These touches are what emphasize the humanity in the tracks and make them feel even more raw and personal.

Queens of the Stone Age continue to prove that they have and always will be the band that won’t let you put them in a box. I think ‘Insignificant Other’ ushers in the band’s not-quite-polished and purposely human sound I’m sure we’ll hear more of on ‘Perfecth’.
