Introducing: Mylah

In an industry that looks to box artists into rigid categories, Mylah is one who has always looked to test boundaries. Her music is not just R&B or Soul; not exclusively sexy, trendy or classic – the different genres and aesthetics are meshed together effortlessly by this budding star. Mylah’s music reflects her overall personality- cool exterior and deeply passionate underneath.

Here’s what happened when I caught up with Mylah to discuss her new music.

How would you describe your sound to someone who had never heard your music before?

My sound is comfortable. It feels familiar and is relatable. Its calming even when I’m saying something wild ☺️. It’s both sweet and harsh, strong yet vulnerable. A great vibe but makes you think.

What inspires the music you write?

Before, the music I wrote came mostly from me just being a good story-teller and observer. So other people’s lives and experiences inspired songs. Now my songs have become a personal therapy session and way to “get out of my own head.” Life is just one long walk of inspiration…it’s literally everywhere!

Describe your typical songwriting process?

Concepts pop in my head all the time! I end up with long lists of concepts in my phone or in notebooks, but in order to write a song, most times it all starts with the beat. I’ll hear music I like and it’s almost as if the beat tells me what to write! I’ll mumble through melodies, record those mumbles, then flesh the song out line by line. I’ll refer back to those lists of concepts, but I rarely write songs out anymore. I just Vibe it, line by line.

Let’s talk about the EP, break it down for me, what’s the story behind it?

The EP initially started out as one particular situation, but as time progressed, and I was writing more, I realize that I was dealing with baggage from a lot of different situations. So the EP is definitely a reflection and a purging of emotions from, I’d say, three of my major relationships throughout the years. With a little bit of BS sprinkled in from randoms here and there, LOL. The EP is a great reflection of me wanting to leave behind my negative emotions, fear, projections and whatever else blocking me from loving.

What’s your favourite song from the EP and why?

It’s a tie. I ADORE “Vibrate” because the vibe is SO good! That song was 100% freestyled and initially wasn’t even supposed to be a full song! It was supposed to be an interlude. Add to that the OutKast sample flip and one of my favorite artists, Willie Hyn, on the feature? Golden. The other is “You Were” because it’s so heartfelt, so personal and pays homage to Faith Evans, who is probably my greatest inspiration.

If you could open up for any artist who would it be and why?

There’s not a particular ONE, but from a numbers and impact standpoint, Rihanna would be major! 😁

Who is your celebrity crush?

Lenny Kravitz for life. Lol.

Who is on your playlist right now?

Mostly my friends! My peer circle is beyond amazing and talented! Brik Liam, India Shawn, Ro James, DayShawnx. I’m also loving Daniel Caesar, HER, and Kendrick Lamar.

What is your favourite lyric of the entire EP?

“If I say I love you/ Why wouldn’t I do it?/ You said you’d catch me when I fall, so i jumped for you / I ran all the way, you stayed in the middle / I was so dumb, I had no clue / Thought it’d be so simple / Why wouldn’t I??”

Love it because I TRULY don’t understand why people get into things they know they don’t want to be in. If i say I’m for you, WHY WOULDN’T I BE FOR YOU!?! (Can you tell I’m passionate about saying what you mean and meaning what you say? ☺️)

Any last shoutouts or plugs?

I’d like to give infinite thanks to my producer K Beatz out of Philly (@kbeatz1) who produced ALL the songs of The Purge. Thanks you to Chance Carter for mixing everything! People can find me on any platform by searching MylahMusic, even my website: MylahMusic.com!
