The second act of the week is Singer Songwriter Pilgrim’s Dream who is based in London, England.

Having played in the ten piece Folk band Captain Kick And The Cowboy Ramblers in the early days of the West London Folk Scene, followed by 4 years as a Royal Marines Commando, Pilgrim’s Dream has since concentrated on writing music and using recording software to create multi-instrument and multi-vocal part songs.

Heavily influenced by 60’s bands such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys as well as contemporary Indie Folk bands including Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, Pilgrim’s Dream has now released his new single Ocean. Think Amber Run only folk with a more acoustic vibe.

The first thing you hear when listening to the song is the beautiful vocal harmonies that begin the intro. These harmonies continue to accent the melody lines throughout the remainder of the track.

You almost immediately imagine driving down the coast of a beach side town or laying down on the beach watching the sun set.

The guitar work throughout the track reminiscent of Of Monsters And Men as is the song structure. The instrumentally thin intro followed by a harmonious first verse and chorus and sombre instrumental breakdown is very similar to the structure of ‘Dirty Paws’.

The beauty in this song is how it all comes together. Everything from the melody lines to the breaks in the beat, to the guitar riffs to the change in the dynamics to the tiny twinkles of the triangle in the first half of the song, is completely intentional. It is evident that a lot of thought went into the musical arrangement of the song.

By the time you get to the breakdown you are completely hooked. The unexpected change in tempo really grabs your attention and gives you time to focus on the songs great vocals.

However, my favourite part of the song has to be the outro. Those harmonies and that electric guitar work, what could compare to that? Okay, so I may be slightly biased as harmonies are my weak spot but hey close your eyes and really listen and you’ll hear what I’m talking about.

‘Ocean’ is an amazing song I’d be more than happy to hear on the radio at any time of the day.
