Jay Prince has made a confident comeback with his new single ‘Us’, a standout track from his long-awaited debut album ‘SHINE’. The London-based rapper and producer co-produced this track with fellow musician IAMNOBODI. The song features acclaimed drummer Yussef Dayes and trailblazing trumpeter Chief Adjuah. Together, they create a vibrant track on unity, self-discovery, and cultural connection. This comeback shows Jay’s sound is evolving, leaning into genre fusion and more collaborations.
To start, Yussef opens up with his signature jazz-funk drumming over a bouncy instrumental. It sets a rhythm that instantly lifts the energy. Chief’s trumpet cuts through the mix with a bold, ceremonial tone so often used in afrocentric music. Moreover, the production builds a vibrant, warm atmosphere, with soulful keys, a laid back bassline, and light synths.
From jazz and soul to rap and hip-hop, ‘Us’ gives variety in a way that keeps me engaged throughout. In addition, there’s a subtle Afrobeats energy throughout the track that instantly pulled me in. The groove makes it impossible not to move and adds a rich texture to the track. Jay’s reflections on the ‘motherland’ paired with the layered instrumentation, hint at a reconnection with his Congolese roots. Moreover, as the track evolves, the uptempo energy remains calm yet energising, like a summer’s day surrounded by good people and good vibes.
This artist delivers his vocals in a conversational, laid-back tone. He seamlessly blends rapping and singing and each line feels reflective and honest. In summary, he is reminding us of what matters in life. His voice combines rhythm and melody smoothly and effortlessly. At times the vocals sound intentionally distant, letting the instruments take the lead and allowing us to appreciate the talented collaborators fully. Furthermore, the simple but catchy gives it that replay value.
Jay’s choice of collaborators shows his commitment to thoughtful genre blending. This artist isn’t chasing the genre fusion trend but using it to show fans his creativity while exploring his truths. Although he experimented with genre blending on his previous project, ‘WONDER,’ he seems more confident and creative with his vision.
Prince’s words carry an introspective warmth perfectly in tune with the soulful sounds. You can feel the musical chemistry as vocals and instruments weave into one another effortlessly. The lyrics explore identity, family, and faith, making the track feel deeply personal. In summary, it reflects his journey to finding inner strength, embracing it, and letting others witness his light.
Although these themes are familiar in his music, he approaches them with more clarity and confidence here. He is thereby giving us a deeper understanding of his journey. The title ‘Us’ feels broad, reflecting on personal relationships, cultural roots, and collective strength.
After a six-year break since his last album, he returns with intention, elevating and perfecting his signature sound. His new album ‘SHINE’ is his most eclectic project to date, infusing all the genres that inspire him. The 14-track record covers love, identity, faith, and personal growth, delivered in a personal and innovative way. Including standout features, from Estelle, Sam Wise, anaiis, and more.
Speaking on the album release Jay said: “It’s been 6 years since my last project. I’ve grown a lot as a man and artist. Thank you for sticking with me—your support means everything,”. That growth is clear, especially on ‘US’, one of his most intentional tracks to date.
Above all, ‘Us’ feels like a reflection of where he’s been, who he is, and who he’s becoming. It’s a celebration of his journey exploring the many genres that inspire him, blending jazz, soul, rap, hip hop, and Afrobeat into a sound uniquely his own. Prince will perform at the KOKO on June 19th, bringing ‘Us’ and the spirit of ‘Shine’ to life.
