Jorja Smith is back, and as a treat gives fans two new singles. This double release quickly follows up both the reimagined and deluxe editions of her most recent record, ‘falling or flying‘. However, these two new tracks are separate from that LP, but whether this is the start of a new era remains to be seen. After all, she did release ‘High‘ in the summer, which felt like the spiritual successor to ‘Little Things‘.
The first, ‘Loving You‘ features long-time collaborator Maverick Sabre, with this being their first team-up since 2019’s ‘Slow Down‘. Although, it is actually a decade-old track that has been recently discovered. It’s quite a beautiful and poignant song on persisting with love, despite the bad times. It’s a great ballad and the two work together nicely as they have done in the past. The music is complimented nicely by the visuals which use footage of couples over a variety of backgrounds. It shows the many stages of love through different time periods and uses colour and editing in an intriguing way.
Alongside this is ‘Don’t Let Me Go‘ which is a lot more acoustic in nature. This is more of a melancholic moment as Smith laments on someone she is no longer with. Sabre’s background vocals intertwine exceptionally with the Walsall-born artist, in particular when she hits higher notes on the chorus. It’s a lovely two-piece that is sure to provide something for the loved-up and the heartbroken.
Further to this, Smith has recently announced the falling or flying Tour in the U.K. Following dates in the U.S. and Canada between February and March, she will start in Manchester in late May. This will be followed by dates in Wolverhampton, Dublin, and two dates in London to conclude. Having seen her live myself, you should definitely purchase a ticket, especially to see these new ballads live.
