Before 2025, Joy Crookes wasn’t known for collaborating with other artists on her own music. However, that has now changed and after working with Vince Staples on the last single, she has now teamed up with Kano on ‘Mathematics‘. It’s rare that the legendary U.K. MC features with artists outside the rap/dance-sphere, so you know it is going to be a special track.
The piano melody soothes you into proceedings as Joy brings those soulful vocals into play, to have the listener locked in. ‘Mathematics‘ focuses on things not working out in a relationship and this song sells that theme. The emotional high notes on the chorus, the violin, the drum pattern, and the line, “It’s not mathematics, it’s love,” are perfect in bringing it all together.
Kano comes in towards the end and delivers a great flow, alongside metaphors about this breakdown. It’s a short, but sweet contribution that just hits the right spot. This is a lovely ballad that brings musicality, passion, and soul to the table. I love what I have heard so far from this new era, and can’t wait to hear more from Joy in the future.
