Extraordinarily talented rapper and actor Little Simz has dropped her latest single, ‘Free‘. The London musician is gearing up for her new LP, her first since 2022’s ‘NO THANK YOU‘. If this latest track is anything to go by, her fans can expect more thought-provoking lyrics with an upbeat, summer sound on the upcoming ‘Lotus‘ album.
Initially, the musician crafted ‘Free‘ as a poem, delving deep into the juxtaposing themes of love and fear. In addition, Little Simz uses her distinct voice here that easily commands listeners to take note of what she has to say. Ever since I heard ‘Offence‘ on the radio, I have been impressed by how she writes songs and uses her vocal abilities. They’re one of the aspects of her music that make the rapper stand out from her contemporaries.
In addition, the acoustic guitar in the song pulls my mind towards modern indie and soft rock. The backing sample of vocals, which could remind listeners of the likes of Mac DeMarco, further enhances this. This softness and subtle exploration of other genres help to make the track feel unique and carefully pieced together. It’s able to contrast the sound of the string sample which leans into a more classical influence.
The rapper, also known by her nickname Simbi, looks to have an impressive year ahead of her. She has been chosen as curator of 2025’s ‘Meltdown‘, the music festival created by Southbank Centre. She’ll join the likes of The Streets and Lola Young with a performance over the 11-day event.
