Loyle Carner, the London-born hip-hop sensation, is back. These new releases mark his first new solo material since the critically adored ‘hugo’ in 2022.

The two releases come from the union of Carner’s new band, formed around his ‘hugo’ tour. The inclusion of his new band is so apparent in both of these tracks. The mix makes it feel so intimate that we are almost in the studio with them.

Carner has discussed his intentions with these tracks, musing that what is important is “…what you pass on, and what you’re able to let go of.”. This new direction in his musical journey truly reflects this statement. Further to this, we can see the best of his innovation and style coming with him into this new era. However, this wordsmith is leaving behind emotions and attitudes that no longer serve his art.

The first of these songs, ‘all i need’ seems to be a representation of where Carner is at musically. We can hear intimate vocal production and polished instrumentation, something fans of the 30-year-old rapper are used to. But this time it feels brighter, almost calmer. The lyrics remain painfully honest, and yet, combined with the feel of a full band, we can relax into the track and hear everything he wants us to hear.

Following this is the introspective ‘in my mind’. We hear Loyle Carner revisit his soft sing-style rap, floating over relaxed guitars and ethereal undertones. Once again, this artist has managed to strike the balance between high-quality production and his complete individualism. This presents listeners with a track that commands any space it is in.

Without a mention of any album as of yet, we cannot make any predictions on his new project. From the songs we have heard so far, we can expect more soul-searching from Loyle Carner against the backdrop of beautifully created and finished music.

Carner will headline the Other Stage at Glastonbury in the summer, being the only chance for fans to catch him live this year.
