Mac DeMarco Drops Gentle New Track ‘Holy’

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Mac DeMarco has released the second single in preparation for his upcoming record ‘Guitar‘. In addition to the release, ‘Holy‘ comes with a music video that adds to the simplistic and stripped-back style of the song. DeMarco has consistently mastered a sound that gently brings in elements of psychedelia and lo-fi. Furthermore, the new album is expected to drop on 22nd August.

I’ve always enjoyed the way this artist pulls feelings into the sounds he creates. I remember first hearing ‘My Kind of Woman‘ probably about five years ago. I found the combination of the sweet lyrics and jangly guitar to create a great summary of love. However, ‘Holy‘ is more stripped back than what I’d usually associate with DeMarco. His vocals and acoustic guitar take the center stage of the track. As well as a simple drumbeat keeping pace in the back. The melody he plays on the guitar feels somewhat reminiscent of blues and maintains softness in the tempo of the song.

I quite enjoy the video that accompanies the song, even if there isn’t any real action within the visuals. Nonetheless, I feel it only furthers the careful decision to keep this song stripped back and authentic. Every decision feels purposeful, and it’s noticeable how much energy the Canadian musician has put into his craft. The shaky handheld camera, paired with the basic level of quality, only furthers this.

The previously released single, ‘Home‘, is more what I’d usually expect of this artist. It has a slightly fuller production and leans somewhat more into psychedelic rock influences. There’s something quite exciting about the two singles being relatively different, as I feel fans are still left wondering what the full LP will look like. Both tracks effectively provoke the emotions they intend and demonstrate strong writing and creative execution.
