Man-Made Sunshine Finds Love and Strength in Solidarity on ‘Life’s Gonna Kill You (If You Let It)’

Conor Mason, originally known as the lead vocalist of English Rock band, Nothing But Thieves, has ventured out alone to build a solo project under the name Man-Made Sunshine. He released his debut single ‘Life’s Gonna Kill You (If You Let It) last week.

As an artist already fully established and practiced, through the success of NBT, it is interesting to see Conor in a position of new beginnings again, finding his own voice and audience away from the band. Utilising all the knowledge and skill he has built up over the years in the industry, Man-Made Sunshine has created a track bursting with vulnerability and reflective introspection.

The tender, emotive energy radiating off the track, is fuelled by the inner feelings of loss and grief experienced by the artist. Essentially, it’s an ode to friendship; building yourself and others up around you during hard times. You feel a strong sense of unity and solidarity within the lyrics, through the honesty he projects.

“Ultimately this song is about survival and trying to find the strength to not give up. Survival from oneself, survival from the darkest, loneliest places you can reach in your mind.”

Sonically, Mason has created a sound entirely different from the mighty rock style featured on endless Nothing But Thieves belters. Although the track is mostly made up of mellow indie instrumentals, halfway through the track we hear an electronic manipulation take place in his vocals. This gives the song a more intricate sound, merging indie and electronica effortlessly. Coupled with the visualiser to ‘Life’s Gonna Kill You (If You Let It)’ there’s a distorted feel weaved throughout the project.

All in all, this is a great opening to Mason’s solo career, showcasing his individuality and vast musical diversity.

Life’s Gonna Kill You (If You Let It)‘ is out now via Sony Music. You can keep up to date with Man-Made Sunshine on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok for future announcements and releases.
