MARINA Continues New Era with Humorous Love Song
Pop icon and outstanding lyricist MARINA has delivered the fourth single from her latest record ‘PRINCESS OF POWER‘. The track titled ‘I < 3 YOU‘ is reminiscent of the clever and often satirical lyrics she has been praised for in previous hits such as ‘Oh No!’.
MARINA has been a staple in electronic pop since her debut album, ‘The Family Jewels‘, back in 2009. She has consistently created candid tracks that deliver thought-provoking lyrics through often upbeat and energetic melodies. Furthermore, this latest effort is no exception. I enjoyed the seventies-style disco element within the production. It tied together both the narrative of the single as well as the music video.
The way she titled the song and the themes in the video clearly show she was thinking about how we perceive others through social media. MARINA herself is presented as an art exhibition with nods to social media and internet culture throughout. I enjoy when pop music has clever narratives and messages to deliver masked with a cute aesthetic. The track reminded me a bit of the 2023 Barbie movie with its over-the-top glamour and light keyboard melody.
Her latest effort, ‘PRINCESS OF POWER‘, is their sixth studio record, released under Queenie Records. It’s refreshing to hear this artist write material that is still very much true to herself. Yet she shows growth and change from her earlier releases. Because she is the primary songwriter for this track, there is a real sense of ownership and pride in what she delivers. With this being the first full-length release since 2021’s ‘Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land‘, we could well be on the way to a MARINA summer in 2025.
