London-based indie-rock artist Mary Middlefield has delivered powerful emotion through her latest single ‘Bite me‘. The singer-songwriter recorded the track in October 2024 at A.K.A Studios in Switzerland and explored themes of self-worth and validation. The record comes as fans eagerly anticipate the potential for a third album.

A Personal Hit

Mary’s lyricism helps to bring the sound of her music to life. The feeling she intends to create with the song as a whole is well-crafted and purposeful. Being a co-producer on the single means that she’s been able to deliver and manufacture a sound that perfectly suits the feelings she intends to communicate. Middlefield, classically trained with the violin, emphasises string instrumentals and creates dramatic build-ups in her music. I felt this side of her musicianship really shone through during the chorus. It felt dramatic and powerful in its delivery.

The feelings of seeking approval and validation are so meaningful and personal that it only makes sense to have an accompanying sound that is able to reinforce this idea. Crafting songs with a narrative that is close to home is something she has been doing since her debut record. The 2023 album titled ‘Thank You Alexander‘ helped showcase her abilities and push her success further.

Diversity in Sound

The style of ‘Bite me‘ is diverse with plenty for listeners to unpack. The drum beat along with the subtly of the guitar throughout reminded me of the sound that brought the likes of The 1975 to stardom. Undoubtedly, there are definitely many aspects that could be referred to as indie-rock and slightly alternative leaning. Radio 6 Music premiered the track, a station that often highlights acts influenced by a variety of musical tastes.

However, some aspects of the record have also led me to think about soft pop. These artists dominate a large portion of the music industry and provide many people with inspiration. This artist’s voice reminded me somewhat of Taylor Swift in the style of singing as well as the sound itself. This essence goes hand in hand with being able to create songs that are relatable and often vulnerable that listeners can understand. Having such a strong and pleasant voice is a benefit for artists like Mary who are able to push the boundaries of different genres and still make it work out in their favour. The past few years have been successful for this singer and producer. After playing the likes of Glastonbury Festival and the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics it’s unlikely to slow down anytime soon. It’s clear that Mary is an artist who knows how to create an innovative and enjoyable sound.
