Mexican artist Maria Jaubert has just dropped her second single, ‘Desapego‘, as a preview of her upcoming debut EP, ‘SQM (Siempre Quiero Más)‘. The EP embraces indie pop; blending spirituality, fantasy, and dreamlike sounds. Jaubert, who developed her singing skills during her childhood in London, worked with producer Christian Jean to create a mix of 80’s influences and modern sounds. She’s also built a community with other indie bands in Mexico, collaborating with artists from groups like Zoé and Hello Seahorse!.
‘Desapego‘ delves into the emotional detachment that surfaces when one remains in a relationship, despite no longer being in love. It captures the moment when the realisation becomes impossible to ignore. This unfair situation for both partners leaves a lingering sadness, which Jaubert conveys beautifully through the haunting vocals. Her silky, dreamlike voice feels both like a goodbye and an apology—to herself for avoiding the truth and to her lover for not acknowledging it sooner.
The production is minimal but impactful, with every instrument playing a significant role. The guitar and synth interact fluidly, making the guitar solos feel like they’re floating in space, while the drum and bass create a swaying groove that complements the melancholic lyrics. Christian Jean’s production enhances the ethereal nature of Jaubert’s music, especially with the layered vocal harmonies that emphasize the dreamy, fantasy-like quality of her sound.
Overall, this is a captivating second glimpse into this artist’s world, and I’m eager to hear the rest of her debut EP and see how her career unfolds.
