Nine Inch Nails, the group known for its sound of industrial and alternative rock, has released a single for the upcoming Tron movie. Tron: Ares is due to drop on 10th October this year, yet this single has helped fuel the hype. The single, titled ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be‘, will be followed by a soundtrack album by the band.
Retro Yet Futuristic
I enjoy the electronic elements that give the track a Daft Punk feel. There’s something reminiscent of a retro eighties style, think arcade machines and bright graphics. However, it is fresh and modern through the production qualities. The lean toward the industrial rock style that the band creates so masterfully is great. With a band that has such an iconic and distinct sound, I enjoyed that it is still easily recognisable as a Nine Inch Nails track. I feel as though it wouldn’t be out of place on their 1994 classic, ‘The Downward Spiral‘.
Trent Reznor has a voice that is always full of power and emotion. I couldn’t imagine a record by the band without his, often distorted, vocals leading the sound. Furthermore, a highlight of this record for me is the musicality itself. I think that the song is written really well. It builds and fades in the right moments. There’s an element of cinema in the way that it feels as though it tells its own narrative.
Filmscore History
Whilst this is the first film score the band has officially received credit for, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have composed numerous film scores throughout their careers under their own names. Their work includes the scores for Gone Girl and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The vast array of experience they have includes two Oscar wins. This means fans are anticipating another well-crafted score that adds to the scale of the film and its narrative.
Nine Inch Nails are currently on an arena tour of huge scale and critical acclaim. With international dates continuing through to September, there’s no slowing down for the band yet. As well as this, the soundtrack album is due to drop on the 19th of September. Fans can expect an exciting month. If this initial single is anything to go by, the band is creating a combination of both retro and futuristic sounds that form an immersive listening experience.
