Perfume Genius and Aldous Harding Deliver Powerful Emotion

The Iowa-born singer-songwriter known as Perfume Genius has released a new track featuring New Zealand artist Aldous Harding for the upcoming LP ‘Glory‘. The song ‘No Front Teeth‘ is full of emotional lyrics and hard-hitting musicality.
This track is the second to be released from the upcoming album after ‘It’s a Mirror‘ dropped earlier in the year. ‘Glory‘ will be the latest addition to Perfume Genius’ impressive discography which began with his first album ‘Learning‘ back in 2010. The artist takes his influence from a variety of musical genres and performers including PJ Harvey as well as Liz Phair. Furthermore, he used music to overcome the difficulties and trauma he faced in his life, which influenced his carefully crafted lyricism and storytelling.
Subtlety and juxtaposition
‘No Front Teeth‘ is a thought-provoking track. Within the first few seconds, the subtlety of a soft piano in the background instantly caught my attention. The use of instruments to help build upon the initial sound makes the track multi-faceted and interesting to listen to. The chorus creates the lift in tone with a guitar riff almost reminiscent of 90s alternative rock. As the quiet subtlety of the opening once again returns at the end of the track, it feels like a narrative in its own right.
Another highlight of the single is the juxtaposition of the two artists’ voices. They balance each other out gracefully and are able to add an additional layer of meaning to the track. The music video, released on 19th February, is a cinematic piece. It’s full of action which leaves the viewer gripped until the final scene. From an ice skating accident to making waffles, it really has it all! Aldous Harding is a great addition to both the song and video. I believe I would be looking for something further in this track if her influence wasn’t there.
The emotion and craftmanship of this track demonstrate the ability of its artist. Perfume Genius is touring across America, with a couple of international dates also available throughout the year. The upcoming album ‘Glory‘ will be released on 28th March 2025.
