Pigs x 7 Bring The Sludge With New Single

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Detroit‘ is the latest single by Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (Pigs x 7 from here on out). The band currently consists of all the original members who joined forces twelve years ago in Newcastle, England. In this time, they have created a niche for themselves in the metal scene.

Genre Influences

The group’s sound has been associated with a variety of genres from psych rock to doom metal as well as noise rock and groove metal. Their new single is their first release since 2023. It’s primarily been linked to doom and sludge metal. The pace is slow for what I usually expect of this genre with the lead guitar, played by Adam Ian Sykes, pushing the song along. He helps to create an uneasy atmosphere that reaches a peak halfway through the track when the music briefly pauses.

Meanwhile, Ewan Mackenzie’s drumming is raw. Personally, I think it sets the tone and it is a highlight in this song. The production reminds me of classic sludge metal such as Acid Bath’s 1994 album ‘When the Kite String Pops‘. This is an element of the track that really stuck out to me. At the moment a large focus of the metal scene is on metalcore artists. Their music often has a much cleaner production quality so I found this song especially refreshing. ‘Detroit‘ also has cover art that is reminiscent of traditional metal bands which is something that suits this track perfectly.

Safe Spaces in Metal

Domestic abuse charities will be receiving all of the proceeds created by this track throughout the rest of this year. To me, this shows true compassion amongst the artists. It’s also a great way to be charitable whilst creating art fans can enjoy. The track ties into this theme, with the frontman and lead singer Matthew Baty singing about male jealousy and resentment. Creating safe spaces in all subcultures is vital and highlighting these issues is a key part of this.

I’d recommend this single for fans of a wider variety of heavy music, specifically doom and sludge metal. It’s gritty and raw with musicians who are talented in their craft. If you’d like to see them in concert, the band will be travelling the UK during April of next year as they embark on a European and UK tour.
