Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns Hit Back at Inequality with New Single ‘Even’

Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns bring an unstoppable force to their latest track, ‘Even‘. The pair is breaking down barriers but also calling out the people who put them there in the first place. The track has gripped listeners and given insight into the struggles that come with being a black woman in music.

With a longstanding friendship and an understanding of the obstacles they have had to overcome as musicians, Cat and Rachel shine a light on the lack of equality in creative spaces. This includes young black women who aren’t given the same treatment as their counterparts. Here, they tackle these issues so blatantly and beautifully. Furthermore, ‘Even’ holds all of the authenticity of their supportive friendship. These two powerful voices come together to show that they know they deserve as big of a space in the creative world as anyone else. Likewise, the lyrics of the hard-hitting chorus capture the message of this tune perfectly, “Us the same? Never change / Guess they never played us even.”. No matter what the talented musicians do they still feel they are working twice as hard to get where other artists are in their careers.

In addition to their solidarity, the duo’s voices wrap perfectly around one another in the last chorus of the song. It is almost as if they are conversing amongst themselves. Along with this, it pulls you in deeper into the conversations they continue to have around this topic. The duo have luckily shared these with us on a new podcast named after the song itself. While deep-diving into their personal struggles and their impact on British culture, it is a pleasure to get even more of an insight into the innermost workings of their thoughts on the matter.

Altogether, in a world where women are put against each other and racial divides still occur, having influential and incredibly talented women speak out about the realities and injustice is not only extremely encouraging but necessary. We can hope that the two will continue to work together, whether that be music or speaking out. It is undeniable that the world is in need of such passionate people like themselves.
