Sekou is an upcoming artist with real potential. Growing up in Leicester, gospel music played a significant role in his influences, thanks to growing up in church. At only sixteen, he began gaining traction through his social media presence. His debut song, ‘Better Man‘, was featured in the BBC Introducing tent at Glastonbury and met with a great reception. Now, his latest single, ‘Never Gunna Give You Up‘, continues to impress.
My first impression was the overall quality and professionalism of the song. The brass additions and choir-esque vocals keep the production layered. Further to this, the chill vibes and soft atmosphere of the song feel more noticeable. This is especially prevalent in the chorus, where Sekou sings with great power but no hint of ferocity or aggression. Think of the early days of Sam Smith. Additionally, I took note of the subtle drum fills, which furthered the layered production and interesting musicality.
Variation of Influences
I enjoy hearing his influences through his vocal style. The sheer power and domineering atmosphere of his singing ability remind me of Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. However, he also cites Frank Ocean and Beyoncé as artists who have shaped his craft. The bassline in this record, as well as the build-up within the chorus, feels reminiscent of funk and disco. This only furthers the Michael Jackson association, specifically the ‘Off the Wall‘ era.
Sekou is definitely only just beginning, with a blossoming career that has already included some amazing successes. Following the release of his debut EP, ‘Out Of Mind‘, he hosted successful listening parties along with a sold-out show at Outernet in London. He also supported pop icon Reneé Rapp on the UK leg of her 2024 tour.
As the momentum continues to build for the talented young artist, I look forward to seeing his fresh take on contemporary pop continue.
