Snoop Dogg Finesses a Feel Good Anthem with ‘Gorgeous’

Snoop Dogg is coming in hot this winter. Gearing up for his December album release, the Californian king reunited with legendary producer and friend Dr. Dre. Together, they have dropped a single packed with glossy production and funky flavour. They kept it California even down to the R&B hook, as the impeccable Jhené Aiko does what she does best.

LA has reigned supreme in 2024 – led by rap titan Kendrick Lamar and his TDE crew. The best of the West are dropping projects at this opportune time – and Snoop Dogg is no exception. Not many rappers find a producer that they can build with so brilliantly. Timbaland and Missy Elliott; Swizz Beatz and the late great DMX are some of the very few that can rival Snoop and Dre’s hit-making history.

This record is different from the sound dominating radio right now. Laden with groovy claps along with a menacing baseline, it’s drop-top cruise in the Cadillac type music. It feels light and relaxed with a classic sound. The Long-Beach native has been tapping into the timeless rap sounds all year – his linkup with boom-bap legend DJ Premier was a track on heavy rotation for me this summer.

This feels like the right mode for Snoop Dogg to be in at this point in his career. However, the good vibes don’t take precedence over the bars. He is reminding the world that LA is more than palm trees and Hollywood – “Droppin’ these jewels, where I’m from you better treasure your checks.”.

For the R&B fans, you’ll be pleased to hear Jhené Aiko back in her alpha female energy. I love this playful side of Jhené almost as much as her more introspective records. She makes this record a radio-friendly R&B/rap fusion that is sure to please the masses.

In conclusion, this is a great taster for the upcoming Snoop and Dre album. ‘Missionary‘ promises features from some of hip hop’s headliners – and interestingly a lot of East Coast representation. I’m particularly excited to hear the records featuring Method Man, 50 Cent, and of course Detroit’s Eminem. The duo are reclaiming that golden era sound, and I am all ears.
