South Arcade Drop New Alt Rock Hit ‘FEAR OF HEIGHTS’

Oxford alternative rock group South Arcade return with their latest single ‘FEAR OF HEIGHTS‘. The group has an interesting sound that combines Y2K throwbacks with pop-punk melodies. However, they perfectly blend in a mix of modern influences and production qualities.
Ever since reviewing ‘Supermodels‘ in March, I’ve been interested to see where this band is heading. I think Harmony Cavelle sets the group apart from its counterparts. Her vocals are quite harsh and jagged, yet they work incredibly well with the tracks’ vibes. She shines on the pre-chorus with the key highlighting her vocal style perfectly. Listeners often compare the band to artists such as Bring Me The Horizon. However, I feel like this is more due to subculture and aesthetics than the music itself.
The track was released on 11th July through BKM Artists and LAB Records. A key feature of this group is their high-energy records. There is a consistent development in their sound, yet I think they’ve managed to maintain this fresh, raw energy that I first picked up on in their 2024 EP, ‘2005‘. Harry Winks drives this energy through his often fast and dirty guitar playing. Moreover, the lead guitar in this new single is one of the most prominent sounds within its mix. It massively helps to keep their sound identifiable as a key component of the majority of their tracks.
‘FEAR OF HEIGHTS‘ is a single where I took note of the drumming. Cody Jones comes into his own through the chorus and drives the beat along with hard and aggressive playing. A lot is happening in the mix of the song, so to break through so clearly is an impressive feat. At times, I think the mix buries the bass. It only really stands out to me when it’s working in tandem with the drums.
I enjoy this new single. I feel that the band has its unique sound, which is both enjoyable and distinctive. They’ll be hitting Reading and Leeds Festival during this festival season. Furthermore, they have a selection of US tour dates later on in the year.
