#IMMusicMonday: Getting To Know Sydney Cope

Inspired by artists like Justin Timberlake and Ariana Grande, LA based, Texas Native Sydney Cope’s music can be described a combination of pop melodies and introspective songwriting.

She sat down with IndustryMe to discuss her latest single ‘Watch Out For Me’ and plans for the future.

How did you first get into the entertainment industry?

Well I first started with dance when I was 2 years old. The way I began singing is actually quite funny actually. I was at a sleepover with friends and we put on like this mini talent show where I sang. I showed the song to my mum who said “I think we should get you in for some singing lessons”, so I started those at age 7.

What inspires you to create?

A huge aspect of all of my art, but particularly my songwriting is heavily based on storytelling. For me being able to express my emotions in this way whether through acting, singing or dance is like being in a therapy session.

Singer, dancer and actor, how do you balance your passion for all 3?

Well that can be hard sometimes, particularly with school. I am actually home-schooled which helps a little bit with my schedule.

How does your family feel about you being in the entertainment industry at such a young age?

Oh gosh my family are super supportive. I am actually originally from Texas, which is where my family lives. I started coming out here to LA for the different acting seasons when I was 14. I made a lot of friends in LA and eventually my mum and I got an apartment out here. We still visit home pretty often and there’s always FaceTime so I definitely feel the love and support.

What’s it like balancing your education with your creative pursuits?

That can be pretty hard. I often get pretty busy around audition season. Education is something that is super important to me, so I am determined to do whatever it takes to make it work.

Do you take any extra lessons for singing acting or dancing?

I do a lot of drop in dance classes at Edge or millennialist, here in LA

I also take Improv and do acting classes

Who is on your playlist right now?

This may come as a surprise but there is such a variety. recently I have been playing a lot of Bob Marley and Billie Elish  I love Khalid too and can’t wait to see him in concert later this year.

Okay so lets talk about music. Your latest single is called ‘Watch Out For Me’ tell us a little about what it’s about?

The story behind ‘Watch Out For Me’ is based on a bad experience I had with a friend who kinda stabbed me in the back. I am personally not one for the drama. This song gave me a chance to express myself and how I felt about the situation without getting caught up in what she was saying

Rumour has that watch out for me was written in 20 minutes, what do you think it was about the song that made it so easy to write?

Yes, that’s true! Usually I start with melody and the lyrics come to me once I’ve thought of a concept. ‘Watch Out For Me’ actually started out on guitar. I think that the words came naturally because the majority of the time I write music whenever I feel something, so the words are coming from a real place

Are there any plans to put out an album anytime soon?

I would love to put out an album or an EP  but for now I am just working on singles. I plan to release another 4/5. All of my songs are pretty different simply because I don’t like to stick to one genre. So ‘Watch Out For Me’ was very pop based. My next single, out July 19th, is called ‘It was you’. I would describe it as really passionate pop with an R&B influence. I mean its still pop but a lot more soulful and I am really excited to put that out. That’s a sound I hope to explore and develop a little more within my music

When I first began singing I started with country, so you may hear a country influence in one of my later releases too.

If all goes to plan, where do you see your career in the next 5 years?

In terms of acting, I would love to be filming for a tv show or some sort of series.

Musically I would hope to be doing a lot of collaborations. I think my dream collaboration would right now would be Billie Eilish; she is just so creative.

If you could open up for one artist dead or alive who would it be and why?

Justin Timberlake! I love Justin Timberlake. That would be such an awesome experience. He’s a great entertainer and I think that there is so much I could learn from him

Do you think the fact that you act helps with your music videos at all?

Totally, but not just with videos. I think it also helps quite a bit with my songwriting. It allows me to dive into the lyrics the same way that I would dive into a script and really explore the characters in depth.

If you could only pick one to do for the rest of your life would it be acting, singing or dancing?

Oh boy that’s such a hard question. I would have to say acting because I could still incorporate a bit of singing and dancing. I guess that’s kinda cheating but I will go with that.

Any final shoutouts or plugs?

Shoutout my patents for being my super supportive. Michael Child and Wendy Child my producers and Laney Butler.
