SZA and Victoria Monét Endorsed as Pop Dominates the Grammys

The Grammys took place, and as usual, there was plenty to talk about. The key talking point of the night was Taylor Swift beating out the strong competition, including SZA, Janelle Monáe, and boygenius, to win ‘Album of the Year’. Swift now has won the award for the fourth time becoming the most decorated artist in the category and adding to her win for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’.

Pop dominated the night, with Miley Cyrus winning ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ for ‘Flowers‘. They were the first Grammy wins for the former Disney Channel star. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish won ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Song Written for Visual Media’ for ‘What Was I Made For?’. Finishing off the main categories, was Victoria Monét’s announcement as ‘Best New Artist’. This win was against big names such as Coco Jones, Fred again.., and Noah Kahan. In fact, it was a great night for the Georgia-born singer, who also won ‘Best R&B Album’ and ‘Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical’.

Overall, it was a successful evening for R’n’B and, in particular, SZA. She won 3 awards in the pop and R’n’B categories, including ‘Best Progressive R&B Album’. Despite not winning in the major categories, it capped off a year of success. Wins for Coco Jones and PJ Morton highlighted a night of celebration for the genre. Also of note, Fred again.. won two awards, Killer Mike swept up the rap categories with three awards, and boygenius and Paramore dominated in the rock categories.

Amongst the new awards, Tyla won the first ever ‘Best African Music Performance’ for the huge hit ‘Water‘. Despite multiple nominations, artists including Janelle Monáe, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lana Del Rey went home empty-handed.

Many will have much to say about the winners in the weeks to come. But, R’n’B showed it’s quality and got it’s space to shine.
