Alternative rock group The Lemonheads have returned with news of their first album, including all new originals, in almost two decades. The band, formed in 1986, is best known for their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s hit ‘Mrs. Robinson‘. Moreover, the exciting return of the group will see them embark on a world tour, which starts this August.
With this announcement comes their latest single, titled ‘In the Margin‘. I think Evan Dando’s voice perfectly suits alternative rock. It stays soft yet cuts through the mix of raw guitars as well as hard-hitting drums. Furthermore, the riff is catchy, and in a track that spans under two and a half minutes, it doesn’t have enough time to get overly repetitive. Dando stated, “I wanted to have a riffy song“, something he certainly made possible within this single.
The band has always maintained the core elements of rock and roll, and this track only furthered it. There’s a real drive to the rhythm and authenticity within the sound. I like how this certainly incorporates elements of punk into their tracks. I also found elements of the record comparable to the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, especially in the melody of the chorus. It’s interesting to see a band pull from influences that have appeared years after their initial conception.
Fans can expect the new album, ‘Love Chant‘, to drop in October. The record is undoubtedly a collaborative effort that features a selection of talented musicians and creators. This includes producer Bryce Goggin, and Adam Green of The Moldy Peaches. The artists released ‘Deep End‘ as another single in preparation for this collaborative album. Tom Morgan from Smudge co-wrote it, with this not being his first time working with the band.
With a tour on the way, new music being dropped, and an album on the horizon, it is the perfect time to discover this cult classic group.
