The Purple List Interviews: 5 Things We Learnt From Winny

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Winny is a musician who you need to keep your eye on. This Nigerian future-star blends many genres including R’n’B, reggae, and soul, whilst showcasing that she can indeed sang. While she has not yet released any new solo material in 2025, she is riding high off her 2024 project, ‘Commercial Break‘. However, there has been a feature on Reekado Banks’2WFL‘, with an unreleased Fred again.. collab on the way.

Recently, I sat down with Winny to talk about her music, passions, and journey to this point. In the interview, which you can watch on YouTube from tomorrow, you can hear the passion this artist has for her music and the love she has for her fans. Both music and artist are down-to-earth and genuine. Overall, you can tell that the music is her, as much as she is the music.

Before you watch the full conversation, here are 5 things we learnt from the conversation…

Music has always been around her

Music has always been a part of life for Winny. There was a home full of music and a DJ uncle, delivering a constant supply of cassette tapes. Although she didn’t grow up singing, a chance choir practice without soprano singers saw her stepping in to fill the role. From this came praise, recordings, freestyles, and radio plays until she thought, why not give the people what they want? Winny attributes her career to people wanting to hear her sing and inspiring her.

Emotion is a big motivator

When you hear this artist talk, you can hear Winny’s passion for the music she writes. The 2024 release of ‘Commercial Break‘ is meant to symbolise the fleetingness of love, how it can catch you unaware, but leave such a large impression on your life. For the fans listening, she wants the EP to feel like they are taking a break and encourages them to enjoy living in the moment.

The impact of the Idoma language

Incredibly, I was treated to a small musical performance as an example of the Idoma language in music. The way the dialect naturally accents certain syllables is a key feature of the language, primarily found in Winny’s home of Nigeria. Through this, it is a characteristic of her music.

Commercial Break‘ was a break for her

Although Winny recorded ‘Lego‘ in only an hour when she had malaria, the whole project wasn’t stressful for the young artist. The artist emphasised how much she enjoyed the writing and recording process. Her primary aim was to have fun and share her thoughts with her fans.

She’s not done yet

During the interview, we also discussed how Winny’s music has evolved, now using fewer words but with deeper meaning. Of her future following ‘Commercial Break‘, the singer said, “I feel like the world has opened to me in a different way,”. I think it will be interesting to see how that is reflected in her future music (and the single she is currently working on! Shhh…).

Winny is on Instagram, X, Threads, and TikTok. You can listen to her music below and watch the full interview on YouTube tomorrow. Read more articles about our Purple List artists here, including our chat with mynameisntjmack.
