UK Songwriters Who Changed The Game, You May Not Know

Whether you are into pop music or not, over the last 10 years, there have been some undeniable top 40 hits. Although most listeners could hear a song and name the artist, could they name the songwriter? Many huge songwriters with Grammys and accolades are often American heroes, however, the UK has
produced some of the best smash hits of the last 10 years. Here, I would like to shine a light on some of them.

Jax Jones

Jax Jones is an unsung hero of UK chart music. Being a producer, he may often get side-lined
by the public’s love of a vocalist. However, massive hits such as ‘You Don’t Know Me’ with RAYE, and
‘Instruction’ with Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don, would not exist without him. Jax Jones is a London-based
record producer and DJ, writing songs for the biggest names, whilst keeping a few for himself.

Jax Jones has recently teamed up with Mabel (once again) and Galantis on the single ‘Good
Luck’, released in March 2022.

Paul Epworth

Paul Epworth may not be in the same age category as the other names in this list, however, it is a name you may not have heard of, despite being very familiar with his work. Florence + the Machine has enlisted his help with writing tracks such as the very popular ‘Shake It Out’ in 2011, and the uber-famous song ‘Rolling in the Deep’, recorded and co-written by Adele.

Epworth’s recent endeavours include Arlo Parks’ first single of 2022 ‘Softly’.

KAMILLE

It is hard to consume any pop music from the last 10 years and simultaneously ignore KAMILLE’s contribution. Working with artists such as Sia, Mabel, and our friend Jax Jones, you cannot deny that the recent pop charts would be a different place without her. Perhaps KAMILLE’s most notable track is ‘Power’ by Little Mix, a female empowerment anthem featuring Stormzy, which made a huge impact in 2017.

KAMILLE can be heard as the leading artist on her new track ‘weight loss’, released on 12th
August 2022.

MNEK

To the public, MNEK must seem like a rising star, with the releases of ‘Head and Heart’ with Joel Corry, and ‘Who You Are’ FT Craig David within the last few years. But, this hit songwriter has been working behind the scenes with some of the biggest artists of recent times for many years. Massive hits of the 2010s such as ‘Waiting All Night’ by Rudimental & Ella Eyre and ‘IDGAF‘ by Dua Lipa would not be heard without MNEK’s input.

MNEK’s genius can be heard in Mykki Blanco’s new release ‘Steps’, which dropped on 10th
August 2022.

Florence Welch

Most people would have heard of Florence + the Machine, it’s hard to ignore them. But many people may not be aware of Florence’s songwriting credits away from the Machine. Adding to the list of songs she has contributed, such as ‘Shake It Out’ and ‘Dog Days Are Over’, are tracks such as ‘Goodnight Gotham’ from Rihanna’s ‘ANTI‘ album (a partnership you wouldn’t expect). 

Welch’s latest work, the album ‘Dance Fever’ was released on the 13th of May 2022.

Artists who contribute to their own songwriting are on the rise, and this is music to the ears of many music fans. Next time you hear a new favourite track, perhaps consider nodding your head towards the unheard-of heroes from behind the scenes.
