Zoka the Author

Zoka the Author is a Sensational Live Performer at Headline Show (Concert Review)

Zoka the Author is a name you will hear more from in 2024. This East London artist was listed by us as one to watch in 2023, and following a year of hard work in the studio is set for big things. The year has started well, being on the shortlist for a potential place at Glastonbury and releasing his new single ‘ELEPHANT‘. But, last night saw him headline Colors Hoxton.

The night was also full of great support acts, kicking things off with Dia Day. Having recently performed alongside RAYE at The BRIT Awards and Royal Albert Hall, she’s proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Vocally, she was on top form, proving to be someone who can take anyone on in that department, and she’s a very good spitter. Performing tracks like ‘Green Tea‘ and ‘Cold in Jan‘, she also showed lyrically and thematically that she can make a good song.

Leicester MC Jafro followed, bringing a mixture of energy and confidence to the stage. ‘Friday‘ and ‘Peace‘, highlighted his ability to be harmonious and lyrical at the same time. With grime, the unreleased ‘Electrolytes‘, or the freestyle ‘3am In Leicester‘, he emphasised his versatility on the mic, and why he stands out. Having been brought to my attention on Lord Of The Mics VIII, he’s certainly come a long way. Jafro has much more to offer than the average MC.

Finally, Tee Peters, alongside The Working Class Band, brought the mellow and conscious vibes to the night. Fresh off the back of his ‘Vows & K-Dramas‘ project, he gave the audience that EP with great instrumental playing and backing singing from the band. Whether talking about ‘Cinnamon Buns‘ or his recent marriage, Peters knows what tempo to rap at. He brought Spacetu out for tracks from his NoSecrets project, with the two flowing nicely back-to-back.

The man himself then came to the stage, full of energy and confidence. He spoke on his toxic relationship with music, before giving us some unreleased exclusives. It showed that the work he put in last year was worth the wait and alongside some more fantastic vocals from Day, was a great performance. Unfortunately, I had to leave amidst performances of his work from his ‘Flower, Girl‘ projects. But, based on what I saw and some clips online, there are only positive things to say about the night.
