The theme of LGBTQIA+ History Month this year is ‘Science and Innovation’. As a music website, we don’t talk about science, but we certainly know about musical innovators. Whether being at the forefront of genre revolutions or giving a voice to communities, these five artists are notable figures. Whether you have heard of these artists before or this is your first time discovering them, they have certainly been innovators in their respective sounds.

Arca

When Charli xcx was picking up Best Dance Act at last year’s BRIT Awards, she shouted out many artists, including Arca. Some may not have heard of this artist, but to those in the know, they understood why and the impact they have had. Identity has been a key part of their style, giving voices to the Trans and Non-Binary communities. Whether through her own work, like the ‘KICK‘ series, or working with the likes of FKA twigs and The Weeknd, they have pushed the boundaries of electronic music. This has been emphasised by her many award nominations, and having continued to experiment with new genres like reggaeton of late, this artist continues to innovate her sound.

Ma Rainey

In a time when being Gay or a Lesbian was illegal, and Black people still had very few rights, this artist stood tall as a singer, not afraid to speak their mind. The ‘Mother of Blues’ would work with icons of the time like Louis Armstrong, and received much attention particulary for songs like ‘Runaway Blues‘ and ‘Bo-Weavil Blues‘. She was particularly very open about Black Female sexuality, Lesbianism, and Bisexuality, in a time where talking about these topics was frowned upon. The music even highlighted being attracted to the same sex got her arrested. Whether as a performer or through her openness in the music, which inspired a character in ‘The Colour Purple‘, Ma Rainey was a pioneer.

Big Freedia

Another artist that Charli xcx has platformed, New Orleans’ Big Freedia has been at the forefront of bounce music since the turn of the century. From performing at block parties and nightclubs to collaborating with Beyoncé, this artist has commanded an audience with their attention-grabbing and energetic performance style. Through a message of body positivity, rejecting gender labels, and bringing the passion, this artist has brought their sound to a global audience.

Brittany Howard

Initially, as the voice behind Alabama Shakes and now also as a solo artist, this singer and guitarist has been at the forefront of some of the best rock music in recent times. Her distinct and soothing vocals are able to grab your attention, whether on the Americana of Shakes’ ‘Hold On‘ or her own ‘Stay High‘. Being an openly Lesbian artist and bringing attention to the struggles of being Black in the South, her words and musicianship are very much respected.

Rob Halford

In a time when rock music had very few openly gay musicians, Rob Halford’s coming out was a big moment. The Judas Priest singer made some iconic metal anthems such as ‘Breaking the Law‘ and ‘Living After Midnight‘. While never explicitly referencing his sexuality in most music, ‘Raw Deal‘ was very open about this subject matter, described by Halford as a ‘coming-out experience’. He has continued to speak about the lack of progress for the Gay community in society, but his acceptance in the metal community shows the positive impact of his decision.
