Arthur Hill Hits the Mark with New EP ‘Missed Again’ (Review)
King of train platforms shenanigans and lover boy anthems, Arthur Hill has released his brand-new EP ‘Missed Again’.
Just in time for those long autumnal nights, we’ve got Hill’s love for love to keep us warm. Firstly, he teased this EP as early as May this year with the first single ‘Appetite’. Also, it is co-written with Danny Casio, with whom Arthur worked alongside on his previous EP, ‘In The Middle Of Somewhere’. The lead single hooked listeners in with its catchy chorus and perfect in-flight song. This is particularly the case for accompanying a dramatic longing stare out the window. Not only does Arthur capture the fumbling awkwardness of having feelings for someone, but it’s also the model song for the theme of this terrific EP.
Likewise, this feeling is swiftly replicated by the dreamy ‘Man In The Middle’ as its second single. It is reminiscent of those vulnerably loved-up One Direction album tracks that swept me up when I was younger. This is yet another great example of his impeccable vocal abilities, especially his power to maintain a storytelling-esque passion. You really can feel every word he says, from humming harmonies to heavenly high notes.
As the project crept closer, its opening track, ‘She’s So Handsome’, gave listeners a better insight as to what to expect. While starting out with a brave confession of obsession, it is followed by a fitting jump to a folk-style admission of this girl, “Wearing the trousers”. Admittedly, we need more men to feel comfortable in themselves to admit they love a strong woman. Undeniably, this is appreciated by the widely female audience that Arthur and his lovable pals have created with their online presence.
There is no doubt that these tracks are inspired by others. Indeed, the essence of The 1975’s Matty Healy and Harry Styles is apparent throughout this whole EP. However, Arthur’s comedic timing and honesty shine brighter than ever, proving that he really isn’t just another male musician with a moustache. Furthermore, ‘Right Now’ is the perfect end-of-the-night last dance song. In addition, ‘Miracle’ feels like the quintessential hype song before seeing that special someone.
Admittedly, my favourite from the EP is the stripped-back ‘Back Here Again’. Arthur’s vocals are once again carrying an already impressive body of work. His ability to set a scene is captivating in all his work, side comments, and specific detailing in his lyrics. It also creates an atmosphere that transports you right into the car he sings about. Undoubtedly, the plucky guitar sounds and repetitive drum hits keep your feet moving.
All in all, this EP proves that Arthur hasn’t missed but, in fact, nailed this project. This is only the beginning for him with the success of his new tracks and his ongoing tour, ‘Stella Artour 2.0’. We can’t wait to see what else is to come for this rising star.
