Bad Bunny for Super Bowl Halftime 2026: Why This Matters

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Bad Bunny has officially been announced as the NFL Super Bowl Halftime act for 2026. As with every halftime act announcement, this major headline was met with mixed opinion. For most, this is exciting. This artist is internationally revered, a riveting performer, and a joyous choice in such a divisive time for the United States. However, some feel that his long-standing opposition to the Trump administration’s choices should disqualify him from performing.

I stand firmly against these critics, not just as a fan of Bad Bunny but as an advocate for free speech. Furthermore, I see this as a moment of sorely overdue unity for the US. This is an opportunity on the world stage to celebrate its Spanish-speaking communities and look to a brighter future. This can, and should, be a moment of pride for the Latinx community and the Hispanic diaspora worldwide.

Why choose Bad Bunny?

Put simply, Bad Bunny is one of the first artists to break into global charts while singing in Spanish. In the English-speaking world, we take English as the default norm in music. Labelled ‘the King of Latin Trap’, this musician is breaking traditions. It may sound cliché to say that music is a feeling; however, he has proven this to be true. You don’t need to understand every word to enjoy his music. It’s rhythm, energy, feeling, and instrumentation that speak its own language. He is fiercely proud of his Puerto Rican roots and has given back enormously to his communities. His Latinx identity is central to his personal and artistic identity. From instrumentation, guest appearances, visuals, dress, and dance, I’m hoping for nothing short of a complete Latin takeover on the football field.

Bad Bunny

An Unconventional Hit-Maker

Bad Bunny has transcended Latin superstardom; he is a bona fide international star. His rising popularity primarily comes from his infectious music, for which he is prolific in his output. His projects take inspiration from his mix of reggaetón, Latin trap, and bachata sounds. However, his experimentation into alternative avenues such as electronic music and rock has paid off massively, and earned him a widespread fanbase. His 2020 effort, ‘YHLQMDLG’, and my personal favourite, Un Verano Sin Ti’,  are examples of his experimentation.

His sound resonates for another reason, too, as even the most casual of fans can admit to hearing hip-hop influence in his records. Firmly rooted in that culture, his collaborations with top rap talent are further evidence of his love for the genre. His versatility is his greatest strength and what makes him a perfect Super Bowl pick. This talent can make a romantic ballad, club banger, and protest anthem — all on the same album.

His Authenticity and Political Stance

Despite his musical abilities, his popularity also derives from his authenticity. He is a proud advocate of LGBTQIA+ rights and has spoken out about fractured political systems in Puerto Rico. Moreover, his fashion choices challenge traditional masculinity, which speaks to a Gen Z audience. Unapologetically outspoken on social media and in his records, he connects with fans through humour, activism, and realness.

Speaking on the announcement, Benito said: “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown.”. We mustn’t forget Jay Z at the helm of the NFL halftime show, as his company Roc Nation plays a leading role in its production. Hov has made it explicit that he thinks Bad Bunny is not only a great artist, but that using his voice for good for the people of Puerto Rico is commendable.

The Roc Nation family and the NFL will be aware of the cultural richness he brings to his tour performances and will expect a show of a similar calibre. Interestingly, Jay and Bad Bunny were on Lebron James‘ show ‘The Shop’ together in the past, where they joked Bunny’s WWE appearance was ‘bigger than the SuperBowl’.

Why does this matter?

The NFL Super Bowl Halftime show is one of the most-watched musical performances in the world. This is a mammoth annual opportunity for the US to showcase its finest talent on the world stage. Broadcasting worldwide, the show has become a cultural mirror of American society, showcasing its diversity and globalisation. In recent years, it’s seen the likes of Kendrick Lamar performing a show that celebrates black culture and rap. In addition, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s 2020 performance was a landmark moment for Latina representation and female empowerment.

The history of Latinos in the halftime spectacle tells a powerful story on its own. It’s a tale of cultural representation, slow inclusion, and eventually bold celebration of that identity. Bad Bunny is standing at the forefront of a new wave of global artists: boundary-breaking, unapologetically themselves, and deeply rooted in culture. It should remain a space open to non-English, non-white artists. His headlining announcement sparks difficult but necessary debates around censorship, identity, immigration, and inclusion.

What will he bring to the show?

Bad Bunny’s vast discography has resulted in many of his songs being truly legendary. Frankly, I wouldn’t like to be held responsible for choosing his set list. Inevitably, every fan will have an opinion on what songs he should perform and the guests he should bring out. I think a balanced mix of global hits (Tití Me Preguntó, Me Porto Bonito, DÁKITI) and emotionally resonant records (Yo Perreo Sola). Plus, I’m expecting him to throw it back with records like ‘Callaita‘ too.

He is a much-liked figure in the music industry, and he has many famous friends he could call on to join him on stage. Social media is in a frenzy discussing who he could surprise us with, from Drake, ROSALÍA, J Balvin, or KAROL G. Whichever route he decides, I want the entire show to be an all-out Latinx moment – unashamedly proud and bold.

Conclusion

To conclude, I firmly believe Bad Bunny is a tremendous pick for Super Bowl LX. Benito is building on a foundation laid by reggaeton legends like Daddy Yankee and the political courage sparked by Tego Calderón. With an attitude not unlike Prince or Tyler, The Creator, this artist is a forward-thinking, fashionable figure – and reinforcing that non-conformity is cool. Simply put, he’s a breath of fresh air for an arguably stale, conservative NFL. I am thrilled he has this opportunity to shine. ¡Vamos!
