Welcome back to First Listen Fridays! Your one-stop shop for all the best music that just dropped today. We have plenty to treat your ears to this week, with Jaz Karis stopping by with a new drop, Olivia Dean, Babeheaven, and even Danny Brown. IndustryMe Editors Tom and Kloe have handpicked the best of the bunch to get your weekend started. Whether it’s chill vibes or a weekend full of plans, we have it soundtracked for you. Let’s jump right in.
Tom’s Picks
Jaz Karis FT. Joshua Baraka – Easy
With a new EP just under a month away, fans continue to be treated to new Jaz Karis. ‘Easy‘ is the second single from that release, and with a summery guitar backdrop, which feels out of place in Autumn. However, with a bouncy Afro-fusion beat and an energised delivery from Jaz, this song is still a welcome addition. Joshua Baraka fits this feeling to a tee, with a voice bursting with energy and joy. The clouds may be coming in, but this track will take you back to more pleasant times.
Danny Brown – Starburst
Ever since I first came across ‘Really Doe‘ in 2016, Danny Brown has always been among the most interesting and creative rappers. This new track is the lead single from his upcoming release, ‘Stardust‘, and off the bat, I am locked in. That chaotic and wavey synths alongside the trap drums allow for a humourous, but head-bopping flow. You can tell the Detroit MC is having fun here, with his words just as creative as this hyperpop-esque production. The second half goes even more nuts in terms of intensity and bass, while the flows match the energy. With so many layers, I can’t wait to hear the rest of this new release in November.

MORGAN FT. Beenie Man – One Man
This artist has given us a double drop today (make sure to check out Bad Gyal Energy), but I have gone with ‘One Man‘. That booming bass kicks the track off in style, while MORGAN gives a confident and angelic delivery that sells her desire for this man. The legendary Beenie Man comes in and matches the energy in a short but sweet cameo. The lyrics and 808Bhav808’s production give dancefloor energy, and this track will certainly find its home there.
Hedex & Maverick Sabre – I Knew That This Was Love
Hedex is a certified name in Drum’n’Bass at this time, and Maverick Sabre is no stranger to the scene, so this makes sense on paper. In reality, that is also the case, with the singer giving his top-tier vocals over this bluesy take on the genre. It is a lot more relaxed compared to the producer’s usual material, but he is showing his musicality here. A nice change of pace, will we get more experimentation from the debut album?

Ady Suleiman FT. Kofi Stone – Never Meant To Hurt You
We have covered both artists over the last month or so, and today they have come together. The groovy production and Ady’s gorgeous vocals are just so soothing as he lays out his regrets over letting this person down. Kofi gives similar vibes with a nice delivery that hits just right. These guys sell the idea that they have messed up and are looking to hold on to what they have. Another great song from Ady Suleiman.
Kloe’s Picks
Babeheaven – Picture This
This song is simply beautiful. “I hope you think of me because I dream of you / and every minute we’re apart life turns another shade of blue.” Londoners Nancy Andersen and Jamie Travis are the multi-dimensional duo Babeheaven, who are returning with a new EP next month. ‘Picture This’ is an utterly romantic and emotional single that makes me emotional on every listen. With over 65 million Spotify streams, this band are building a solid fanbase with sold out shows and industry praise to boot.

Superdays – Endless Romance
Here is a new indie band to fall in love with. I’m excited to share with you Superdays, a 6 piece alt-indie band hailing from Kent and southeast London. Their music is infectiously uplifting, and previous track ‘We Could Both Be So Happy’ caught my attention last year for its impressive instrumentation and nostalgic sound. Their growth as a collective is evidenced with the new single ‘Endless Romance’, a charming song about the eternal search for the perfect romance. It’s hopeful, heartening and a great slice of underground indie that you can impress your friends with.
Tiara Thomas FT. H.E.R. – Move
What’s better than one smooth as honey vocalist? Two. Distinguished songwriter Tiara Thomas teams up with long-time collaborator H.E.R. on a single that is set to soar up the R&B charts this weekend. The pair have already proved their winning ways, clinching Song of the Year together in 2021 at the Grammys for H.E.R.’s record ‘I Can’t Breathe‘. Showcasing the power of her penmanship yet again, this refreshingly cool single sees her speak on choosing her inner circle wisely. “Know they be switching up crews and views / So I gotta watch who I choose.“, she sings.
TYGERMYLK – Babe III
Looking to hear something beautiful and moving? Press play on this single. TYGERMYLK is a new discovery for me, and this touching and tender single explores grief in a profound way. This is a song about grief, family ties, and holding onto cherished memories. A long way from their busking days, this Hastings-based singer/songwriter has their debut album ‘Local Girl, Always Tired’ locked and loaded. It will be arriving later this year.
Olivia Dean – So Easy (To Fall In Love)
One of the most anticipated albums of the year from the U.K. music scene has finally dropped, much to the delight of fans everywhere. The remarkable Olivia Dean lets her newest single loose from the new album ‘The Art of Loving‘, and it’s everything I hoped it would be. She’s singing about how easy it is to fall in love with her, and I agree whole heartedly. “I’m the perfect mix of Saturday night and the rest of your life.“, she sings. It’s giving Chaka Khan ‘I’m Every Woman‘ energy, and deserves all the radio play.
