Foo Fighters have returned with their first release in two years. The band, fronted by Dave Grohl, has been together since 1994. The past few years haven’t been easy for them. Drummer Taylor Hawkins passed away in 2022, as well as Dave’s recent controversies in his personal life. However, ‘Today’s Song‘ marks the return of the rock legends and the beginning of a new era for them.
Furthermore, the single was released to mark a special anniversary. It coincides with the band’s 30th anniversary of their debut, self-titled album. It also comes after some speculation that the band had projects in the works as they released a cover of Minor Threat‘s ‘I Don’t Wanna Hear It‘. With the vocals recorded in recent times and the instrumental recorded back in 1995, it makes for an interesting listen that both modern and classic Foo Fighters sounds.
I’m not the biggest fan of the opening for ‘Today’s Song‘. I understand the intent, but I think it leans into being a ballad, which doesn’t flow great into the main bulk of the track. Dave’s vocals are his usual, distinct style that I do, however, enjoy. They suit the style of the group well and stand out. To me, they are a focal point of the band. The message behind the lyrics he sings is heartfelt and filled with the emotion of the highs and lows that the Foo Fighters have faced across their career.
The group builds the track into the iconic arena rock style that has made them famous. They are brilliant at delivering powerful guitar riffs, huge choruses, and impressive drum fills. They’re clearly a group who know what they can do and they ensure it is done well. I’d say the track plays it somewhat safe in regards to its delivery. Yet the message behind it conveys so much emotion that no one can knock it. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.
