Coming from their highly anticipated new album ‘Sunshine‘, Jungle are back. They bring a song bursting with the same radiant energy we’ve grown to expect from them.
‘The Wave‘ doesn’t hesitate in producing a warm, energetic atmosphere to earn your attention. From Lydia Kitto’s signature high-pitched, dreamy vocals to the harmonies supporting her words, Jungle has once again created a song you can’t help but sing along to.
The band makes sure to give their melody interludes to thrive, particularly towards the end of the track. Here, the instrumental break allows the song to be stripped down and built back up again. This lets you hear each part of the song come together with ease. That was something that I really liked, as it made me appreciate each component and the intentionality of the group’s decisions. As far as the lyrics go, they remain loyal to the positive vibe of the song. Although this isn’t to suggest they are without depth.
The words seem to detail a kind of relationship turmoil that the narrator promises they can overcome. They describe “Livin’ on a wave of what we become.”, speaking to the unpredictability of life in a somehow comforting way. In true Jungle fashion, they set out to explore universally complex feelings like love, longing, and yearning for simpler times. This is all whilst also maintaining an upbeat electro-pop sound. I can confirm that the song is successful in this balancing act. The lyrics mesh perfectly with the song’s timbre, creating the fun, uplifting experience that is ‘The Wave‘.
It’s difficult for me to try to compare the song, or a lot of Jungle’s music, to other recent releases. In the increasingly saturated environment that is today’s music industry, you’d be hard-pressed to find an artist with the intensely unique sound and aesthetic that the trio continues to create. Their tracks are easily recognisable and widely appreciated. I believe this to be the result of years of dedication to perfecting their own individual sound.
The complete ‘Sunshine‘ album will be released on the 14th of August. It looks like it will be full of similarly vivid tracks to coincide with the (hopefully) improving weather.
