Marcos Cabanas has recently released the single ‘Self Love‘ in anticipation of the release of his full-length album. Originally from Switzerland, Marcos is focused on making and producing records reminiscent of artists like Bruce Springsteen and Chris Stapleton. Furthermore, he focuses on the struggle of the average man and American culture.
The record contains a powerful narrative of finding oneself that showcases Marcos’ songwriting prowess. Recorded between the Netherlands and London, the single is a collaboration between him and long-time collaborators Raph Dias and Olivia Vricella. The singer is responsible for the songwriting, production, and mixing; Raphaël Dias provides the drums, guitars, and mastering; and Oliva Vricella provides the backing vocals.
The lyrics feel relevant to the current existential and spiritual crisis that some people worldwide are experiencing. Grappling with themes of faith, ambition, ego, and the expectations of others, the song doesn’t have a solution. Instead, it encourages us to do better at each moment; to love each other in more positive ways. This makes the title, ‘Self Love‘, perfect.
The track feels like it could have come out of an American road trip film from the 60’s. The production has a few Americana and country elements that work well in conjunction with the straightforward nature of the lyrics. It has elements of rock and folk that add an extra touch to the production. Additionally, the use of mandolin and tambourine adds that characteristic brightness of American music.
This single brought me nostalgia for an era I wasn’t born into. The America of Bruce Springsteen and Dolly Parton, where Nashville worked as the center of the world for country artists was a great era for music. The references in Marcos’ song about feeling lost and constrained are still very relevant today. Unquestionably, we’re seeing more and more artists getting back into the roots of Americana and country. Overall, I can’t wait to see how the genre evolves in this modern era. I’m eagerly anticipating this album and seeing how his career develops.
