The Cure released their last album, ‘4:13 Dream‘ in 2008. Sixteen years later, their new single, ‘Alone‘, marks a new era for their music. After a highly anticipated comeback, the band delivers a fitting first release.
From the first listen, I found Robert Smith’s voice strikingly similar to their earlier releases, the first being back in 1979. His vocals are the trademark of the group’s sound, and it is still very much a defining feature. The track has a runtime of almost seven minutes, which gives their eager fanbase enough time to fall in love. It has hints of loss throughout its lyrics and sound, something Smith has had to deal with after losing both his parents and his brother in recent years.
The band’s following has remained loyal and intrigued since its peak in the 1980s. Within recent years, they’ve also managed to garner a younger generation of fans who are eager to delve into their back catalogue.
The new album, ‘Song of a Lost World‘, will be released on 1st November this year. If this first snippet is anything to go by, listeners are in for a treat.
