Courtney Barnett Covers ‘Lotta Love’ in a Dreamlike Way

Courtney Barnett has released a cover of Neil Young’sLotta Love‘. The track is the first release from an album which is dedicated to Young with all proceeds going to The Bridge School in California. The tribute album is titled ‘Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young‘. Moreover, it sees a collection of iconic singers choose a track from Young’s impressive back catalogue. Eddie Vedder known for his role in the grunge powerhouse Pearl Jam as well as folk rock group Mumford and Sons are just two names from the star-studded bill.

Undoubtedly, the Australian singer-songwriter’s version of the 1978 hit takes a soft approach. The singer’s vocals are dreamlike, as well as being somewhat reminiscent of the likes of Stevie Nicks. The use of piano chords keeps the track gently moving along as it continues with a stripped-back momentum. Whilst it keeps a similar vibe to the original track it feels more updated with its production value. I also found it to feel more optimistic through the different vocal styles the artists use respectively.

In addition, the track is accompanied by a video showing Barnett performing the track in the recording studio. It adds to the raw and authentic vibe of this cover as the singer keeps things simple and elegant. The 37-year-old artist is no stranger to covering iconic tracks. She covered ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror‘ by The Velvet Underground & Nico back in 2021, with her indie style taking some influence from the iconic band. Furthermore, she contributed to the 2016 tribute album for the Grateful Dead where she played the 1970 release ‘New Speedway Boogie‘.

Courtney Barnett has a handful of live dates in America throughout the year. The first volume of ‘Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Diamond‘ will be released on 25th April this year.
