Madison CunninghamSomething To Believe In

If you’re searching for a soul-stirring ballad this Valentine’s Day, ‘Something to Believe In‘ by Madison Cunningham is the one. Released in 2019, this beautifully poetic declaration of love feels deeply intimate. The spellbinding vocal delivery alone is enough to stop you in your tracks. However, the emotional weight of the song truly peaks at 2:22 in a Radiohead-esque interlude, where a single sustained note feels like pure ascension.

“If you need something to believe in / You can believe in my love.” sounds like a desperately romantic plea. But beneath it lies a deeper truth. The song acknowledges that love is a risk and that choosing to trust someone means accepting their inevitable failings – while also believing in their commitment to keep trying. In the end, that perseverance is what love truly is.

A hidden gem that deserves far more recognition, ‘love song‘ by Manchester-based artist Molly Becker is an invitation to open your heart and mind to love. Released in 2023, the track embraces love as a powerful force of joy. Meanwhile, its breathy, ethereal vocals float over an eerie jazz riff that loops hypnotically throughout. The raw, intimate production makes the song feel deeply personal, and the vulnerability in their vocal delivery evokes comparisons to Birdy and Gabrielle Aplin.

The BeatlesHere, There And Everywhere

As an avid fan of The Beatles, I often overlooked this track from their iconic album ‘Revolver‘. Since getting older I’ve been able to appreciate the beauty in the lyricism. Paul McCartney takes the lead on this gentle love song that is a slower, more traditional sound in comparison to some of the experimental psych rock that features on the record. ‘Tomorrow Never Knows‘ instantly comes to mind as a stark contrast. I think that the line “I want her everywhere / And if she’s beside me, I know I need never care.” is such a beautiful expression of love. Whilst the group had a lot of catchy love songs earlier in their career, as they matured so did their songwriting abilities and this is perfect proof of that.

Kenyon DixonBrand New

When you think of Valentine’s Day music, you think of that good old-fashioned R&B. I want to highlight an underrated master of this genre, Kenyon Dixon. He’s penned some of the most hypnotic slow jams for your favourite artists, but saves some for himself! I can’t get enough of the L.A. crooners’ classic sound. ‘Brand New’ is a stand out from his latest EP that pays homage to R&B of the late 90s/early 2000s. This is seductive, laid-back listening to soundtrack your February 14th.

KamakazeNeed U Two Know

The hip-hop and rap world isn’t always known for ‘romantic’ portrayals of relationships, but there are outliers. One of these belongs to Leicester MC Kamakaze, and a track from his first ‘Wavey Shirt Wednesday‘ EP. This is an ode to that special someone, and how doing things like making dinner means more than buying things for his partner. Most of all, he declares that his partner has made him a better man. This track showcases how love and relationships help people to grow and become the best versions of themselves. Musically speaking, the flow is nice and compliments the chilled beat, with everything fitting into place. Furthermore, it creates a floating feeling, kind of like how I imagine love feels. For me, this showcases aspects of love that are not always emphasised, making it stand out.
