Firstly, what are Gracie Abrams’ fans on about? When news broke that Dora Jar would open for the American pop chauntese’s world tour, her seeming anonymity and slow jams caused offense. A petition was written to replace Dora Jar, and Abrams had to call out this Internet behaviour as “wildly uncool”. Lest one forgets, opening acts of global concerts are prime real estate to discover unheard artists you could one day move in with, the way we did with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and even Abrams herself.
Secondly, if fans had taken the time to listen to the Californian singer-songwriter, they would have nothing to fear. ‘No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire’, Dora’s debut album, was one of the pop standouts of 2024. The 28-year-old musician’s ability to bend herself to shift into any song structure is prodigious. Standout ‘Ragdoll’ melded guitar sensibilities with a pulsating hook. ‘Smoke Out the Window’, on the other hand, smashed bubble-gum pop through an EDM-looking glass. With the help of producers such as George Daniel (The 1975) and Rostam Batmanglij (formerly of Vampire Weekend), Jar had surprise bangers around every corner while keeping it all incredibly introspective.
Now, as she embarks on her latest supporting role, Dora Jar has released her new single ‘Lucky’. It’s a quieter kind of bedroom pop that demands closer listening but still bleeds from the same evocative, experimental vein. Over an acoustic guitar strum and synth world-building, the singer dreams about a love that is almost within her grasp. Her wispy voice plucks at your attention one syllable at a time, along with killer poetry like, “My four-leaf clover is our two lips kissing”. If you stretch your ears, you can almost hear Soundcloud-era Billie Eilish through the yearning. ‘Lucky‘ also hearkens back to Dora’s 2021 EP ‘Digital Meadow’, a stripped-back but no less glorious release that introduced Jar as the music world’s newest explorer. As she begins globe-trotting, here’s hoping more fans will come to welcome, rather than condemn, her imagination.
