Read on for our hand-picked selection of can’t-miss tunes that will make your weekend.
Tom’s Picks
Blood Orange FT. The Durutti Column, Tariq Al-Sabir, Caroline Polachek & Daniel Caesar – The Field
As soon as I saw the musicians on this track I knew this was going to be something special. The peaceful and tranquil sounds match the gorgeous countryside cottage on the cover. Also, vocally this is stunning from all involved. Whether the violins or the drums and bass, this is a beautiful listen. It has been a while since we heard from Blood Orange, and we’re glad to have them back. Also, Caroline fans can rejoice as she has also dropped ‘On The Beach‘ from the ‘Death Stranding 2‘ soundtrack.
Joy Orbison & Overmono FT. Skiifall – Lippy
Having previously worked together on tracks like ‘Freedom 2‘ and ‘Blind Date‘, another Orbison/Overmono banger is always welcome. This has a more mellow, but summery vibe that will have you swaying in the breeze or on a dancefloor. Skiifall catches the beat nicely, effortlessly flowing over this sound. A more relaxed vibe than we normally expect from these two, but still as good as expected.
KNEECAP FT. Mozey – THE RECAP
With a highly publicised court battle and Glastonbury set, I was always eager to hear new KNEECAP. Their first release since ‘Fine Art‘, they’ve teamed up with D’n’B producer Mozey for a short, but punchy mix of rock and electronic music. Bringing all the passion and chaos you’d expect from these guys, it is sure to get the mosh pits started and Kier Starmer sweating.
Laufey – Lover Girl
A new Laufey record is something many are looking forward to, but in the meantime, I am enjoying this new single. This old-school pop sound she has perfected is always a blast, as she sings about her embarrassment of being lovestruck. Vocally as captivating as ever, this is another great slice of the upcoming ‘A Matter of Time‘ pie.
Nanette – I’m Not Psycho
Having recently opened for Sasha Keable (more on her later), this South African singer is getting worldwide attention. Marking her third solo release of the year so far, this is some forthright R’n’B. The trap drums and synths bring the energy, as Nanette narrates her issues and this tumultuous relationship. As per, this artist knows how to bring an emotional performance and sang their heart out. That bridge at the end really emphasises this, closing out another top-notch release.
Kloe’s Picks
BIM – Golden
I love me some BIM! The soulful songstress returns with a poignant track for her community about recognising beauty in spite of oppressive forces. It’s a reminder that just because others can’t see our worth doesn’t mean it’s not there. It doesn’t mean we’re not made of star stuff. We are all golden and we need to see it. “Are we falling apart to fall into place?“, she sings. In a time when we all feel broken, and we’ve all experienced rejection – we need tracks like this.
If Jill Scott’s ‘Golden‘ gets you to your feet, this is the ‘Golden’ to bring you to your knees.
late night drive home – day 2
Fresh off their brand new album ‘as i watch my life online’, the El Paso-based group is my new artist discovery this month that I can’t get enough of. Perhaps I’m late to the party uncovering these indie rockers, but this song feels like I’m in a 2000s chick flick movie montage and that’s a summer vibe I can get behind.
J Hus FT. Asake – Gold
New heat alert! With an addictive rhythm sure to get you on your feet, J Hus drops his signature blend of cheeky lyrics and boastful energy alongside Nigerian superstar Asake. The pair have a clear message for their opposition, sit back and watch while we drip in greatness and gold. Wake up, get paper, repeat is the mantra for Hus. This is a fierce revival of one of Britain’s finest hitmakers.
Sasha Keable – Feel Something
As one of our Purple List artists this year, we’ve known for a long time that Keable is something special. This is a relatable track of crawling back to toxic situationships just to escape a numb feeling that’s taken over. Dizzyingly destructive, this song is a refreshingly honest look into the mental warfare that relationships can cause, whilst showcasing Sasha’s incredible vocal range.
KATSEYE – Gameboy
This girl group has just levelled up. This cheeky new single ‘Gameboy‘ is a super-sweet pop banger with a serious hair-flip attitude. The band just dropped their EP ‘BEAUTIFUL CHAOS’ which is set to take the world by storm. Their universal appeal is a result of their ability to fuse all the elements of feel-good girlband magic, from K-Pop brilliance to their mix of R&B and dance sounds.
